Red Dead Online has managed to add to the longevity of the critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2. The online version of the game is also set in a western setting at the turn of the twentieth century but it offers players the ability to personalize their character and play alongside each other. Despite the positive elements of the title, it has been a turbulent few months for the online game. Players initially complained about a lack of content coming to the game and when it arrived it was followed by a host of issues.
The latest update to Red Dead Online was called the Naturalist and it split fan opinion before the game began to run into a host of issues. Since then Rockstar Games have rolled back features and appear to be working on fixing other problems. In the wake of this many fans have begun to notice smaller online lobbies. While there are some who would rather play alongside more players in a lobby, a good portion of the community has been drawing attention to the positive elements that have come about from this change.
The smaller lobbies have been praised for allowing players to interact with more random events, find more legendary animals while still feeling like a full world. At the moment it is rare to find lobbies with over twenty members and fans who have seen the benefits of playing with fewer players are hoping that the smaller party size continues. On a technical side, it seems that players are also experiencing less technical issues in Red Dead Online and many are beginning to wonder whether this move may become more permanent.
It is unclear whether this change has been a deliberate move by Rockstar Games to avoid issues or whether this is a coincidence that has proved to be a hit with players. Red Dead Online is still receiving updates as it fixes issues and it will be intriguing to see if the smaller lobbies remain. Many will hope that this way of playing the game continues and perhaps a way to please fans would be by allowing players to pick smaller or larger lobbies before they begin playing.
It will be interesting to see how Red Dead Online continues to evolve from here, but it seems that a portion of its fan base is keen to see more small lobbies in the future. Whether this has been a deliberate move by Rockstar Games and becomes a permanent feature remains to be seen, but it does seem to be impressing players.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
