Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS4 featured plenty of great wisecracks from the webslinger, but none came close to the ongoing Spider-Cop joke. However, fans of Marvel’s Spider-Man have discovered that the Spider-Cop gag was originally going to go a bit further.
Within the code for the game, fans have discovered a major unused asset in the form of a wearable Spider-Cop suit. Reddit user AstroDunce posted a video of the suit in a T-pose, and the detail on the costume shows that it was finished and ready to go despite never actually releasing. With Spidey set to make another PS4-exclusive appearance in Marvel’s Avengers, there’s a tiny chance the suit will show up there, but fans will likely have to wait until the game’s sequel if they want to see it.
It may not even come then, as the post’s top comment from Reddit user MitchyPower makes a great point as to why it could have been removed. Essentially, the visual of a cop (even a jokey version in a supersuit) beating up random people would look bad in a game focused on heroism. Given the criticism Spider-Man received for not being critical of the police, this skin’s release could have gone down even worse. It will be interesting to see if it’s included in the supposed PS5 remaster of Spider-Man, though if this line of reasoning is correct, it will likely stay on the cutting room floor.
Still, it is a bit of a shame that the skin may never see the light of day, as if it did it would easily rank among Spider-Man’s best suits. A good amount of work was put into the design, as a police jacket covers the top half of Spidey’s suit and a goofy white moustache lines the mask. The suit is completed by the inclusion of a police hat, and the look clearly was intended to be a good bit of lighthearted fun for fans.
Given the various suit abilities in Spider-Man, it would not be surprising to see the suit come with its own quip system. Spidey had plenty of Spider-Cop one-liners in the main game, so being able to say one at the press of a button would be a nice touch on an already enjoyable suit. Love it or hate it, the discovery of the suit nearly two years after Spider-Man’s release shows just how dedicated both Insomniac and the game’s fans are.
Fans of Marvel’s Spider-Man can get their next dose of web-swinging and crimefighting when Spider-Man: Miles Morales launches later this year. While Spider-Cop will probably not be in the spinoff, his memory (and code) live on in the original.
Marvel’s Spider-Man is available now on PlayStation 4.
