Marvel’s Avengers has seen equal measures of excitement and criticism leading up to its launch, with the Avengers property coming with huge expectations attached. The Crystal Dynamics team must have done something right, however, as the game’s beta has broken an impressive PlayStation 4 record.
The official Square Enix Twitter post shared a message of congratulations for the team that developed the game, acknowledging exactly what record Marvel’s Avengers broke. According to the post, “the Marvel’s Avengers Beta was globally the most-downloaded beta in PlayStation history.” While having such a huge number of people trying the game is impressive on its own, a large player base also gave the Avengers developers important feedback which the team used for the game’s launch version.
That feedback led to a massive day one patch for Avengers, and the team listening to fans is a good first step for a game meant to have a lot of longevity. The record itself is an impressive one, and it would be interesting to see how close the second most downloaded beta on PlayStation was to Avengers. There have been plenty of high-profile betas in recent years, from the Call of Duty series to both Destiny games, ensuring that there was a fair bit of competition for the superhero-focused title.
It will be interesting to see if Marvel’s Avengers holds onto the record through the rest of the year. If it does, it will likely keep it forever as the PlayStation 5’s release lowers the chances of new PS4 betas. Its only real competition is Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which recently had its beta date leaked through another CoD game. Regardless of whether Avengers keeps its #1 spot or drops down to #2, the beta was a massive success on the PlayStation platform.
After seeing these numbers on PlayStation, it is hard not to wonder how the beta fared on Xbox and PC. It likely performed well there, too, but its unsurprising to see that PlayStation is where the beta really took off. With a PS4-exclusive Spider-Man hero coming to the game, the PlayStation version of Marvel’s Avengers clearly has an advantage in terms of content. How this impacts the sales on Xbox and PC remains to be seen, though the exclusivity did anger many people interested in playing as the webslinger.
Still, it is nice to see that Fall Guys isn’t alone in smashing PlayStation records, with Marvel’s Avengers new beta download record helping to show how good of a year 2020 has been for gaming. As this record shows, many people are clearly excited about the concept of an Avengers game that will be updated for years to come. With the game now officially released on all platforms, fans of the beta can now take control of their favorite superheroes.
Marvel’s Avengers is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X upgrades will also be available.
