Spike Lee and his team of horror enthusiasts are back for another collection of spooky stories in Tales from the Hood 3. This third release in the anthology collection launched in 1995 promises to tell new tales and take new souls in its series of brand new terrifying tales.
In the form of a short trailer released on Twitter, the official account for the horror-comedy anthology announced the release with a tease of what fans can expect from veteran filmmakers Rusty Cundieff and Darin Scott. Releasing on October 6th on DVD and digital, as well as coming to Syfy the same month, the new entry in the series should give hungry viewers plenty of time to freak themselves out throughout the month. Considering the circumstances of 2020, it’s probably best if people learn to make their own horrific fun this Halloween.
The original Tales from the Hood in 1995, directed by Cundieff and executive produced by Lee, gathered four horror stories revolving around various social justice subjects, from racism to domestic abuse and police corruption, among others. The tales were all connected with the framing device of an eccentric storyteller working at a funeral home and selling drugs. Reviews were mixed, but the collection eventually gained a cult following, resulting in a follow-up in 2018.
Tales from the Hood 2 brought on Darin Scott to work with Cundieff on writing and directing duties. Production was a speedy process, with Cundieff announcing the project in January 2018 before beginning to film shortly after. The sequel finished filming in April of the same year and released only 3 months later in July. Notably, Keith David took over the storyteller role from Clarence Williams III, who played the character in the first anthology.
Likely due to the production team now realizing they have a dedicated audience, this third entry is now releasing only 2 years later, amid a pandemic no less. Starring Tony Todd (Candyman) and Lynn Whitfield (The Josephine Baker Story), the 2020 sequel boasts it will “scare and thrill audiences with its horrifying twists and social commentary.”
Perhaps it makes sense for it to release so soon. The themes behind these stories always tend to center on social justice issues, particularly hardships faced by Black people in the U.S. With tensions as high as they are in 2020 and Black people experiencing what seems like new hardships every single day, maybe this is the perfect time for more Tales from the Hood. Fans can decide for themselves when the collection comes out in October.
