Star Wars Characters That Need Standalone Games | Game Rant

Star Wars is a cornerstone sci-fi franchise that’s been defining the genre and expanding as a universe since it first appeared back in the ’70s. It’s no surprise that such a powerful series spilled over into media besides film, and that includes video games. Even in the last few years, Star Wars fans have gotten some broad choices, from Star Wars Battlefront 2 game to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order to the upcoming LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

However, among all these diverse choices, there’s a significant lack of games focused on exploring major characters from the main storyline. Although there’s a huge breadth of characters that would be exciting leads for games, here are just a few choices that would be a particularly notable right now.

Frankly, Obi-Wan would be an exciting choice at any time. A mainstay of the franchise, Obi-Wan is a main or supporting character in six of the nine installments in the main movies, and he’s made plenty of appearances beyond that. There’s novels and comic books exploring his character and backstory, and naturally, he played a major part in both versions of the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars shows. Even more exciting, Ewan McGregor is coming back to revive Obi-Wan in the Disney+ original Kenobiwhich will explore his time after the fall of the Jedi and before Luke Skywalker’s heyday.

All this rich backstory goes to show how important Obi-Wan is to Star Wars and how rich he’d be as a lead character. He’s seen a lot of difficult times that don’t make it into the movies, including some romantic entanglements. A Kenobi game could easily focus on any number of points in his life, whether it’s about his time as Qui-Gon Jinn’s apprentice, teaching Anakin as a Padawan, Obi-Wan’s exploits during the Clone Wars, or his time in hiding after the rise of the Empire. There’s no shortage of possibilities when it comes to bringing this beloved character to life in a game.

Admittedly, Ahsoka Tano is a slightly less conventional choice than the classic Obi-Wan. Even though she’s a much newer character to the franchise, she’s still become more and more important to the setting. She might have ruffled some feathers when she was introduced for the more recent Clone Wars show, but the show took her through some serious character arcs. It even opened the gateway for future appearances. She’s shown up on other animated Star Wars shows, she made a voice cameo in The Rise of Skywalkerand she’s even going to make a live action debut in the second season of The Mandalorian.

The break from animation to live action proves that Ahsoka is here to stay. She’s gone from a troublesome Padawan to a well-traveled character with a hand in countless stories across the galaxy. Ahsoka has never had the chance to star in her own show, so maybe she can get a game of her own instead. Much like Obi-Wan, it would be interesting to get the chance to play through Ahsoka’s journey after the Jedi Order collapsed. Now that she’s proven that she’s here to stay, Ahsoka deserves to get the spotlight for once.

Of course, it’s not only Jedi that deserve more attention. Back in 2002, LucasArts released Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, which focused on Jango Fett and explained how he got entangled in the efforts to make a clone army. In a way, this is ironic. Jango Fett only appears in one Star Wars movie, while his cloned son Boba Fett was in two of the original movies and has had a devoted following for many years. In spite of that following and appearances in books, comics, and games like Battlefront, Boba Fett has yet to get his own game.

Boba has struggled to get his own media in the last few years, which is a shame. Not only was his standalone movie cancelled, he very nearly did get his own game, but Star Wars 1313 tragically died in development. However, The Mandalorian has generated such fresh interest in  bounty hunting that it might be the perfect time for a Boba Fett game. It would be a great spiritual successor to Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, and channel the beloved grimier side of the Star Wars universe that Solo: A Star Wars Story and The Mandalorian have explored recently. The Star Wars universe is truly rife with beloved characters that would thrive in their own games — if they were only given the chance.
