Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League – Who is Deadshot?

Last week Rocksteady released the reveal trailer for their upcoming game, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The game saw characters like Superman, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark make their first direct appearances in the Arkham games’ DC universe.

However, it also saw returning characters Harley Quinn and Deadshot. It is likely many viewers did not recognize Deadshot from his previous appearances in the Arkham games, with a new character design and voice actor from his past incarnations. The Suicide Squad’s sharp-shooter has a long history in both the games and comics, and a checkered past that many fans will be interested to learn before meeting the character again in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Deadshot’s first appearance in the Batman comics was radically different to his current design. Deadshot first appeared in 1950 sporting two pistols, a tuxedo and a top hat. His real name is revealed to be Floyd Lawton. Floyd grew up with a wealthy family but with an abusive father, his mother, and his beloved older brother Eddie.

When Floyd’s mother told her children that their father had finally become “too abusive” the boys attempted to kill him. However, Eddie’s shot hit their father’s spine, permanently disabling him, while Floyd’s bullet hit and killed Eddie. After that, Floyd swore he would “never miss” another shot again, a catchphrase that returns in the Suicide Squad trailer, suggesting that this Deadshot is indeed Floyd Lawton.

Floyd became a hired assassin and mercenary, his catchphrase becoming something of a marketing slogan for his new line of work. However, he has never been able to kill Batman despite appearing in the comics as a recurring villain.

As a member of the Suicide Squad Deadshot does the name proud. He has been diagnosed with “suicidal tendencies” and has repeatedly expressed a desire to die in a spectacular fashion. His wish was almost granted in the Suicide Squad comics when he was shot by police in front of the Lincoln Memorial after assassinating a senator, but he did this after being told to prevent his superior from assassinating the same man and followed his exact orders by doing it himself.

Deadshot first appeared in the Arkham-verse’s timeline as one of the 8 assassins hired by Black Mask – revealed to be the Joker – to kill batman for a prize of fifty million dollars in Arkham Origins. When Batman was nearly cornered by Deathstroke, it was Deadshot who inadvertently rescued the Caped Crusader while trying to claim the kill for himself. Batman would go on to break both of Deadshots arms, leaving him to the police when Floyd told him to kill him quickly.

In Arkham City, Batman tracks down Deadshot and prevents him from assassinating Jack Ryder, also known as The Creeper, another DC vigilante. Once again he is left at the mercy of the Gotham City Police Department, which seems to lead to his recruitment into the Suicide Squad in the Arkham timeline.

Though his appearance has been redesigned for the new game, fans can expect Deadshot’s personality, in particular his lack of concern for his own life, to remain part of the core of the character. Many fans will be interested to see how his “never miss” mentality comes into contact with the more chaotic members of the Squad like Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang. Many more will want to know how the villain who couldn’t stop Batman hopes to take down Superman and some of the other most powerful heroes in the DC canon in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will release in 2022 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
