The Witcher 3 Next-Gen Versions Announced for PS5, Xbox, and PC

One of this generation’s most popular games is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The highly anticipated sequel to 2011’s The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and based on the dark-fantasy novel series from Andrzej Sapkowski, CD Projekt Red’s beloved action role-playing game was met with instant success and critical acclaim upon its release in 2015 for its engaging narrative, deep gameplay systems and incredibly ambitious open world. Fans who have yet to experience The Witcher 3 or are wishing to jump back in will no doubt be overjoyed at CD Projekt Red’s latest announcement.

CD Projekt Red announced today that The Witcher 3: Complete Edition will be receiving a brand new port on the PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The game is going to take advantage of the technical enhancements such as ray-tracing and faster loading, but players of The Witcher 3 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will also receive the next-gen versions for free when they launch in 2021. Players yet to jump into The Witcher 3 will also be able to purchase the game separately on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

In a post on The Witcher‘s website, CD Projekt Red claims that the port will “take advantage of the most powerful gaming hardware, the next-gen edition of the game will feature a range of visual and technical improvements, including ray tracing and faster loading times across the base game, both expansions, and all extra content.” It continues, “The next generation edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will release as a standalone purchase for PC, Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, as well as a free update for everyone who already owns the game on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.”

While the boxed versions of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X releases claim that the game will feature the “Complete Edition,” which compiles all of the base game and its expansions, it is unconfirmed if owners of the base version of The Witcher 3 who bought its DLC later will be able to upgrade to the next-generation version.

Fans of The Witcher 3 are aware of the fact that, while the game is commonly perceived as a modern masterpiece, even on the Xbox One X the game is demanding due to its vast open world, a next generation upgrade is exactly what the game needs. This port also opens the game up to new players, namely fans of Netflix’s TV adaptation of The Witcher which saw The Witcher 3 see a huge surge in sales during the end of 2019. With the second season coming up, as well as a multitude of spin-offs, even more fans are likely to jump into the sprawling RPG series.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions will release in 2021.
