Twitch Tricks 30,000 Viewers With PS5 Console That Was Actually Cake

With the next generation of consoles getting ever closer to launch, millions of gamers around the world are hotly anticipating the latest news and information on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. For a couple of hours thousands of viewers watched Twitch’s stream for the Chat’s Choice Awards, believing that it had managed to get an actual PlayStation 5 for the event. It turned out to be expert level trolling.

Around 30k viewers watched the stream, as what appeared to be a PlayStation 5 sat in the background. The stream’s hosts Mari Takahashi and Day9 even acknowledged its presence near the start of the stream, saying they would talk about the “Elephant in the room” later. Of course, such a teasing statement spread rapidly, causing viewers to arrive in anticipation of a potential preview.

Eventually Mari Takahashi went to get the supposed PlayStation 5, after bringing it closer to the camera she briefly mentioned samurai action adventure game Ghost of Tsushima, and then took a samurai sword to it. Her slicing revealed a tasty looking dessert, rather than expensive hardware, and left Twitch viewers as the latest victims of the popular “Everything is cake” meme.

Since June, videos showing cakes that look like everyday objects have gone massively viral, with brands like Adidas even getting in on the meme craze. Parts of the media have called it the perfect craze for COVID-19 lockdowns, while others can actually experience an increase in stress hormones from the confusion. Excited gamers expecting to see a real PlayStation 5 reacted with a mixture of disappointed laughter and irritation at the news viewers had been trolled.

Whether the stunt was simply a joke by Twitch to increase stream viewers, or whether it was also a type of product placement from Sony remains unknown, but the PlayStation 5 cake certainly got the attention of the gaming community. In brighter news for those excited about the upcoming console, a recent rumor has suggested that it may launch on November 13, shortly after the expected release of the Xbox Series X, and in time for the major holiday games releases such as Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Cyberpunk 2077. This date seems a logical choice to avoid clashing directly with the Xbox Series X launch, but not be so far away as to risk the Microsoft console gaining too much momentum.

Officially both consoles remain listed as “Holiday 2020” releases, but with PlayStation 5 pre-orders expected soon, gamers will hopefully not have too long to wait before more details are announced.

PlayStation 5 is due to launch in Holiday season 2020.
