Apex Legends Reverts Evo Shield Values | Game Rant

Respawn Entertainment certainly went all out when it came Apex Legends‘ Season 6 update. Along with weapon changes like the Mozambique’s additional round per clip, the battle royale received an update where all armor was converted to Evo Armor. To counteract this shield change, the amount of health gained per level of Evo Armor was reduced by 25, however with the game’s most recent update, this change has been reverted back to the values seen pre-Season 6.

In a post on the Apex Legends Blog, Design Director, Jason McCord, shared the decision to revert the armor values to pre-Season 6 values following data analysis and player feedback. In the post, he explained that while this change had received positive feedback in Respawn’s internal playtesting, ultimately it is a far smaller team than its daily player base.

When Apex Legends added Evo Shields to the game, the goal was to reward players who were willing to engage in firefights often by doing damage and “evolving” their armor. Players who upgraded their armor all the way would have a total of 225 health, causing many final firefights to end in long drawn out fights that ultimately ended with whoever had more healing items winning the showdown. To counteract this, Respawn Entertainment lowered the amount of health gained at each Evo Shield level, lowering the time to kill.

While this update reverses Respawn’s initial armor change, that doesn’t mean it’s done making changes to the Evo Shield. In a Reddit post explaining this armor update, Designer Daniel Klein explains that internal conversations are still occurring around this topic, and “everyone’s got red armor” is still a major concern. One of the possible changes he suggests as a possibility is requiring more damage needing to be dealt to upgrade Evo Shields from purple to red, although there’s no word on if that will actually be added to the game.

Alongside this update, Apex Legends received several other changes, such as a voice line for Caustic being removed after it was pointed out as a racial slur towards Crypto. While some saw this as a “watering down” of the character, the majority of players saw this as an overwhelmingly positive change and a win for developers listening to their communities.

Apex Legends Season 6 also released with several bugs, some of which were fixed in this update. One odd glitch that was patched out caused heirlooms to not do nearly as much damage to Rampart’s amped cover as a regular melee attack did. While a normal melee would take out cover in two hits, heirlooms would take upwards of 14 hits before being destroyed.

Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with Switch and mobile versions coming Fall 2020.
