Capcom has been enjoying a successful run for the past few years, and the majority of its success came from its remakes of Resident Evil games. In 2019, Capcom released Resident Evil 2 remake, and the game proved to be a massive hit for the company, with the remake surpassing the lifetime sales of the original. Earlier this year, the Resident Evil 3 remake was released, and although it wasn’t as successful as its predecessor, Capcom said that it met sales expectations. Now, players are wondering which Resident Evil game will be given a second life, and while no official announcement has been made, all signs point to Resident Evil 4.
Of course, given that the remake of Resident Evil 4 remains unconfirmed, it is unclear how Capcom will approach the reimagining of this game. However, if both Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes are an indication of what players can expect, then Capcom may introduce new elements and storylines that were not found in the original game. However, with Capcom currently elbow-deep in developing Resident Evil 8, then one can’t help but wonder what would happen if the studio decides to tie in Resident Evil 4 with Resident Evil 8.
Of course, given that Resident Evil 4 has since established its story, which forms part of the franchise’s canon history, it would be difficult to tie it with the upcoming game. However, it is worth noting that Resident Evil 8 will take place in an unspecified village, and this village may be the critical element in tying these two games together. At the moment, details about Resident Evil 8 and the exact location of the town remains unknown. However, it wouldn’t be unlikely if the village featured in Resident Evil 4 will be the precise village in Resident Evil 8.
If this turns out to be accurate, then players can expect to revisit some of the iconic locations in Resident Evil 4 in the upcoming next-installment. However, it is more than likely that the villages that are shown in RE4 and the trailer of RE8 are not the same, but it wouldn’t be unlikely if they are somehow connected, especially if the one in RE8 would also be located in Spain. Apart from the location, RE8 could also tie in with RE4 with the re-introduction of the Las Plagas parasite that infected the Ganados in the 2004 game.
Currently, the enemies in Resident Evil 8 are still unknown apart from some villagers, the werewolf-like creature, and what appears to be a witch. However, if Capcom reveals sometime in the future that the villagers in RE8 are infected with the Las Plagas parasite, then it is more than likely that RE8 and RE4 are somehow connected, though the major element that ties the two is yet to be seen. Of course, if both games are indeed connected, then players can also expect to see the return of the Los Illuminados, which is a cult that was first seen in Resident Evil 4.
Although it appears that the cult was stopped at the end of Resident Evil 4, it is worth remembering that the Los Illuminados reappeared in the CGI film Resident Evil Vendetta, so the notion of the cult surviving after the events of RE4 is definitely not impossible. In Resident Evil 8’s trailer, it has been revealed that players will encounter werewolf-like creatures. At the moment, it is unclear whether these creatures are products of a virus or parasite, or if they are supernatural. However, the Los Illuminados is probably behind these werewolves, and their existence may be the result of the cult using the Plaga parasite once again.
In terms of connecting Resident Evil 4 to previous installments in the franchise, there is really not much to work with given that Resident Evil 3 basically ended the Umbrella/Raccoon City saga of the series. However, during the development of the Resident Evil 3 remake, it appears that Capcom introduced changes to Nemesis, which somehow connects the tyrant to Resident Evil 4. In the Resident Evil 3 remake, players witnessed that Nemesis now has the ability to infect zombies and make them appear like the Plaga A enemy in Resident Evil 4.
During an interview with several developers from Capcom, it has been revealed that the studio wanted Nemesis to infect zombies with parasites similar to how Ganados were infected in Resident Evil 4. Moreover, the developers said that “We wanted NE-a infected enemies to be visually similar to the Plagas-infected Ganados as a means for fans to piece together how Nemesis fits within the whole Resident Evil franchise.”
With this in mind, it is possible that Capcom tying Nemesis to Resident Evil 4 is an indicator that the remake is indeed happening. Moreover, this could also mean that Nemesis may appear in the Resident Evil 4 remake, though it would probably not be exactly the same, given that Umbrella is no longer in the picture. Of course, these RE4 Remake additions may or may not happen, but if they do, then it is nice to see that Capcom is making an effort to tie every main game in the Resident Evil franchise together, especially since new entries appear to be disconnected from the series’ overall plot.
Resident Evil 4 remake is rumored to be in development.
