Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition has not had the smoothest launch. Between numerous omissions and questionable decisions, Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition launched to a lukewarm response by fans and critics. To further hamper the release, Crystal Chronicles Remastered now suffers from serious multiplayer issues and has even been pulled from certain digital stores, promoting an apology from the developer.
Crystal Chronicles Remastered director Araki Ryoma posted an open letter on the Square Enix website acknowledging the issues. Ryoma begins by apologizing for the delay in posting this message, which comes over a week after the game launched. It is following this note that Ryoma begins to address the ongoing problems.
Ryoma first acknowledges the situation in which players were unable to play any multiplayer due to server capacity issues upon launch. Since Crystal Chronicles Remastered dropped local cooperative play in favor for online matchmaking, the Final Fantasy spin-off required stable servers. Ryoma acknowledged that three days after launch the developer increased server capacity which Ryoma notes as “comparatively more stable,” while acknowledging that further improvements will be done if necessary.
What has further incensed fans with the online play being unstable is that Square Enix opted to region-lock multiplayer in Crystal Chronicles Remastered. It is because of this region-locking that the most egregious bug was able to slip through Square Enix’s quality assurance. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition was pulled from the Nintendo eShop in both Australia and New Zealand. Reports indicate that beyond server overload, Oceania gamers did not have functioning multiplayer. Ryoma did not address this version of the game in his apology but it was acknowledged on the official Square Enix Twitter account on September 2.
Ryoma continues to state that the team would proceed to release “rapid updates” to resolve issues that persist across the game. While the post ends with only a few noted updates, Ryoma assured players that those mentioned are just the start. Based on player feedback, the team will continue to announce further fixes and updates. Ryoma ended the post saying “I must once again apologize for the inconvenience caused to our customers” and assured fans that the team is trying to “put things right.”
While the is no denying that Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition is struggling at launch, those still interested have the opportunity to test the waters. Crystal Chronicles Remastered features a Lite Edition that is a free-to-try model on mobile devices. With the game being cross-play, it gives players the chance to play the game as intended with friends when the multiplayer is functional. While Ryoma did not no give specific times, fans are hoping the fixes come quickly.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition is available now on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Mobile Devices.
