Final Fantasy 7’s Cloud Vs Barret: Who Wins In A Fight?

Final Fantasy VII is considered by many to be one of the greatest games ever made, and it’s easy to see why this is the case. After all, the game single-handedly made JRPGs the norm on the original PlayStation and is arguably responsible for modern interest in JRPGs.

Final Fantasy VII‘s cast is of particular note, with Cloud and Barret’s dynamic lending itself to an interesting relationship. While both individuals don’t really gel at the start, the way their friendship naturally blossoms over time is a treat to witness — in fact, if someone plays their cards right, they can even unlock a rare “date” with Barret in the Gold Saucer.

10 CLOUD: Massive Close-Ranged Fighter

Cloud might be a party member you can’t remove in Final Fantasy VII, but that’s never much of an issue due to his impressive stats and ridiculous damage output. Fitting Cloud with a good weapon and some powerful materia can lead to him becoming a damage-dealing machine who can wipe out most enemies in his path single-handedly.

9 BARRET: Tremendous Long Range Marksman

While Cloud might deal a lot of damage, his attacks generally bring him up close and personal with enemies, which can prove to be a double-edged sword given the circumstances.

Barret isn’t held back by this drawback at all — his arm-mounted gun generally hits like a bomb and allows him to hang back and stay away from the range of any dangerous melee attacks as well.

Cloud will certainly have his hands full dealing with the leader of AVALANCHE.

8 CLOUD: Deceptively Quick

While Cloud might have a disadvantage when it comes to range, he more than makes up for this deficiency with his deceptively high speed. This can lead to a situation where Barret might be hanging back for a breather, only for Cloud to nimbly close the distance and get some good hits in.

7 BARRET: Built For Back Row

One benefit of keeping Barret in your party is the fact that he can hang in the back row and receive no damage penalty at all. JRPG veterans know that the back row also halves all incoming physical damage, meaning that Barret will certainly have a superior defense in his battle against Cloud.

6 CLOUD: Mako Gives Him An Edge In Battle

While Cloud’s Mako poisoning did more harm than good on both his body and mind, it can’t denied that the powers he received allowed him to become the super soldier that we all know and love. With these augmented reflexes, it goes without saying that Barret will have his work cut out for him in a one-on-one duel.

5 BARRET: Can Take Advantage Of Cloud’s Fragile Mind

Barret isn’t exactly an evil person around — in fact, even calling him bad might be a bit too much — but when push comes to shove, he can rely on some dirty tactics to turn the tide of battle. Cloud’s Mako poisoning led to his mind being damaged — something that Barret can make a hassle if he decides to play the mind game. While this is a highly unlikely tactic for a character like Barret to use in battle, one can’t deny that it could prove to be quite effective.

4 CLOUD: Getting Barret Worked Up Isn’t A Challenge

However, one can’t talk about mental states without mentioning Barret’s hot-headedness, something that has infamously clouded his judgment at times throughout the game.

If Barret can resort to dirty tactics, then so can Cloud. Getting Barret worked up with a few choice words can cause the gun-toting brute to become sloppy and careless in battle, allowing Cloud to punish him for the same.

3 BARRET: Never Backs Down

That being said, it will take quite a bit of effort from Cloud’s end to actually break down Barret’s will to fight — something that is proven to be quite hard in the games as well.

Only the most hopeless situations will deter Barret from believing in himself… and, even then, he definitely won’t go down without a fight.

2 CLOUD: Omnislash Wrecks Everything In Its Path

Talking about two Final Fantasy fighters would be impossible without mentioning their iconic Limit Breaks, with Cloud’s being quite legendary in that regard.

The manner in which he whips Sephiroth around with his Omnislash at the end of Final Fantasy VII is always satisfying to watch, and using this same technique against Barret can lead to a quick victory.

1 BARRET: Angermax & Catastrophe Deal Tons Of Damage

Cloud isn’t the only fighter with an ace up his sleeve in the form of a Limit Break — Barret has the same ability as well, and one might argue that his ability can hit for way more damage!

There are two Limit Breaks that are viable for Barret. If he’s not all that powered up, then using Catastrophe is the safer option. If Barret’s stats are maxed out, then using Angermax is a better option since it can hit for way more hits than Catastrophe, and capping off all these hits at 9,999 can lead to some serious damage.
