Marvel’s Avengers‘ varied collection of heroes allows players to battle evil with a wide range of super powers, and as Marvel fans would expect, the Hulk is the game’s premiere tank. This guide shows gamers how to manage Hulk’s Rage meter while maximizing his defense and damage potential.
Crystal Dynamics’ hotly anticipated video game adaptation of the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Marvel’s Avengers, has finally dropped on current gen consoles, with next-gen releases to follow late in fall. So far, Avengers’ reviews have ranged from mixed to positive, but the game has already teased an impressive slate of DLC content, suggesting Crystal Dynamics is invested for the long haul. Starting out with a hero who boasts high survivability is solid way to get down the basics, and nobody is heartier than Hulk.
Unlike Iron Man’s ranged-combat focus in Marvel‘s Avengers, Hulk excels in the thick of things. His signature mechanic, Rage, grants extra damage, health recovery, and most crucially, renders him invulnerable against yellow and blue attacks. Having the right control scheme can make all the difference in timing effective Rage use. Rather than using the trigger button as a toggle for Rage mode, use the tap and hold setting, as this will allow players to pop Rage just in time to guard against blue and yellow attacks, conserving as much energy as possible.
When outfitting Hulk, prioritize gear that enhances Resilience and Resolve to boost defense and health, respectively. Players looking for a more offense-oriented approach may prefer to prioritize Might and Valor, but tank builds seem to yield more reliable results. If players’ loadout options seem limited, knowing where to find Avengers’ caches of hidden items can give them more equipment to work with.
In terms of building, focus on upgrades that grant extra Rage, or Rage recovery mechanics. Unstoppable Ferocity, which increases the Rage meter’s maximum, and controller chaos, which reduces Rage costs by 20%, are both solid choices. In terms of recovering Rage, Klaxon Frenzy grants 10 energy after performing perfect evades, while Devil’s Rampage will increase the amount of energy gained after performing takedowns. Be sure to check out the mechanics behind Hulk’s Heroic Abilities as well.
If the preceding tips are not helping, it may help to review a breakdown of Avengers’ stats, attributes, and combat ratings. And if wading into the thick of things still isn’t working out, it may be best to switch to a hero with a different play style. Players looking for a satisfying, melee DPS all-rounder will want to try out Captain America, while those preferring support oriented characters may want to give Black Widow and Ms. Marvel a look.
Marvel’s Avengers is available now for Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One with forthcoming releases planned for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
