One of the main draws of Marvel’s Avengers is the ability to team up with friends to smash AIM soldiers and robots in co-op. However, some Marvel’s Avengers players who first start up the game may be confused about how exactly to play co-op in the new game.
The first step to playing Marvel’s Avengers co-op is to sign up for a Square Enix account. Unfortunately, players are forced to have a Square Enix account handy if they want to play Marvel’s Avengers online or engage with any of its online features. When that’s done, there are a couple of different methods available to the player to start up a game of Marvel’s Avengers in co-op.
The way that most people will want to do it is by advancing far enough in the Marvel’s Avengers story campaign to unlock co-op. Simply play through the story, and before too long, players will unlock access to the War Table. Marvel’s Avengers gives players War Table access within the first couple hours of the story, and so it shouldn’t take too long at all to unlock it. From that point forward, it’s possible to play some missions in co-op, though many of the campaign missions are restricted to single-player only. Co-op is mainly for endgame content.
The other way players can unlock co-op in Marvel’s Avengers is by simply clicking the Avengers Initiative option in the main menu. However, this does result in some Marvel’s Avengers story spoilers, and so it’s better for players to just unlock co-op naturally. Just playing through the campaign is also the best way to learn the gameplay mechanics as well as unlock all of Marvel’s Avengers playable heroes, but the Avengers Initiative option is there for those who want to start playing with friends as quickly as possible.
There are a couple of other things worth pointing out when it comes to Marvel’s Avengers co-op. For one, players can not pick duplicate heroes, which means that everyone has to be a unique character. And secondly, playing with real people is not required. Marvel’s Avengers gives players the option to play with up to three other AI companions if they would rather keep the game a solo affair.
In future, fans can expect Crystal Dynamics to expand on the game with even more co-op content. It’s been teased that Marvel’s Avengers will be getting raids of some kind, though more details on that are not available at the time of this writing.
Marvel’s Avengers is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
