Fans of basketball have, like fans of many sports, been in a weird place lately when it comes to their sport of choice. The actual NBA season was cut off thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the problems extended into official NBA games as well. NBA 2K20‘s servers crashed thanks to the suspended season, and even now things have not returned to normal. For many, NBA 2K21 is the chance to get things somewhat back on track.
A cross-generation game, NBA 2K21 retains many features from its predecessors. The basketball simulator allows players to take control of and manage various real life NBA teams. There are different modes for different types of play, includeing the story-driven Career mode, as well as more casual modes. All of this includes a virtual currency (VC) system allowing cosmetic and team member purchases.
As some have pointed out, the model by which NBA 2K21 is offering a next-gen update isn’t great. The only way players won’t have to purchase the game twice to play on the next console generation (if they want both versions) is to buy the $100 Mamba Forever version of NBA 2K21. To offset the sting somewhat, this version also comes with several unlocked and exclusive components. One of the biggest draws was 100k VC for players who purchased the Mamba Forever version. However, many players have reported that they did not receive the promised VC upon turning on the game. Many, if not all of those players apparently, still have not received the VC.
This is a bad oversight by 2K Sports, since the VC is one of the biggest draws of the Mamba Edition for those not looking for cross-generation play. While VC can be earned in game, it takes a lot of play to earn a good amount, mostly because it can also be purchased for real world money. The issue of earning VC through good play is compounded by the issues with NBA 2K21‘s shooting mechanics. The problems with NBA 2K21‘s shooting has gotten so bad even Damian Lillard has commented on it, and many more people have commented on the VC issue.
The backlash for the VC has not gone unnoticed by 2K Sports. Shortly after the issue was made known, the company issued a tweet in response saying a fix was coming. However, this was released two days ago. While 2K Sports also promised to fix the shooting mechanics, as of this article, many players are still without their VC.
This is far from the only complaint about NBA 2K21 so far, but it may be the most serious. Things like the shooting mechanics are gameplay issues that can be fixed. Problems with player design, like with in-game Andrew Wiggins, can be corrected. But when it comes to the VC, players paid extra with the understanding they would have it on purchase. Hopefully they will soon.
NBA 2K21 is available for PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, Xbox One and mobile devices. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions will release after the consoles launch.
