Overwatch Experimenting With Major Shotgun Changes | Game Rant

For many, Overwatch is the premier hero shooter game, even as challenges come in from quality competition like Apex Legends or Valorant. On lists of most influential FPS games, Overwatch is often included for its focus on characters, and for its loot boxes. The game has been running strong for years now, and part of the reason for this success is the constant tweaking being made to characters and weapons to keep gameplay fresh. One such update has just dropped and looks to make some changes to shotguns in the game.

While not all changes are welcome when an update drops, the continual updates are made in an effort to keep players interested, so when Blizzard decides to change Moira’s main abilities, it can upset fans, but it has to be accepted that this can happen. Sometimes updates are in response to fan outcry, and other times an update drops to shake up ‘the meta’ of the game, getting players to try new strategies.

In an Experimental Mode patch, Overwatch is looking to change the way shotgun pellets travel, in an effort to give players more control over weapons that fire with a shotgun-style spread. Previously, each shot had a random rotation applied to it, causing the gun to be a little more erratic.

Now there will be less variance to each shot, allowing players to have more control aiming these kinds of weapons. The change will affect Ashe, Doomfist, D. Va, Reaper, Roadhog, & Torbjörn. It could be that experimental changes like this are being tested ahead of the rumored 2021 release of Overwatch 2. Finding the right formula ahead of that game’s release will be important.

Changes are intended to make a better play experience, and this shotgun update will either be a big boost to those who are already using the weapons, or get more players to consider using them. Sometimes these changes matter less for fans. Some fans enjoy the game for the characters, like the Overwatch cosplayer who created Mercy wings for their costume, complete with animatronics and LED lights. It takes some serious dedication to a character to create such elaborate, time-consuming costumes, and seeing this kind of dedication means fans of the game are really invested.

Overwatch’s reach extends beyond just gaming even, with Blizzard hosting a competition for animated videos of its iconic characters. The Overwatch Student Animation Festival is another indicator of how popular the game is, and it all comes back to keeping the content fresh.

As Overwatch continues to churn out updates that get players back into the game, it will likely stay at the top of the heap for some time.

Overwatch is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
