PS5 Exclusive Returnal May Have Had Its Launch Window Leak

Returnal, the upcoming PS5 exclusive that is currently in development by Housemarque, may release have had its release window leak, if an ex-PlayStation employee’s resume is to be believed.

Returnal was one of the several PS5 exclusives that was revealed at Sony’s PS5 showcase back in June. The game appears to be a suspenseful sci-fi third-person shooter featuring roguelite elements. The game’s official trailer, which dropped when the Returnal was first announced, shows a female protagonist who crash lands on an alien planet and dies in a mysterious attack, only to wake back up and relive the horrifying experience again and again until she can break the cycle. The trailer’s tone and use of a time loop is reminiscent of films like Edge of Tomorrow.

The trailer left out when the game will be released, but many fans speculated it would probably hit shelves sometime in 2021, as almost all of the titles that were featured in the showcase are releasing within one year.

Now there seems to be evidence to back this up. A user on Twitter said they noticed a clue to when Returnal will arrive on an ex-PlayStation employee’s resume when they were combing through profiles on LinkedIn. The ex-employee in question is Laura Gilbert, whose LinkedIn resume says she worked for Sony until February 2019. Her past development experience includes working on games such as Horizon Zero Dawn and Detroit: Become Human.

Also listed on Gilbert’s profile is Returnal, which has the year 2021 in parentheses next to the title. The other games that were listed on Gilbert’s resume are similarly accompanied by the year they released, all of which are accurate. This suggests that Returnal will indeed release sometime next year.

Out of all the games that were featured at the PS5 showcase, Returnal has yet to receive a lot of media and fan attention. This is likely partly due to the fact that information remains limited on the mysterious title. Housemarque has a pedigree for its arcade-style games, as the developer has worked on titles including Nex Machina and Matterfall, both of which released on PS4 in 2017 to positive reviews. It is likely safe to assume that Housemarque will continue to put out solid shooters with Returnal.

Returnal looks like it will offer players a unique experience when it releases, as few games have looked as good while experimenting with roguelite mechanics. The game is also confirmed to make use of the PS5’s Tempest 3D Audio technology, which will immerse fans in Returnal’s nightmarish alien world. If Gilbert’s resume is accurate, fans will have to wait until next year to experience all that Returnal has to offer.

Returnal is currently in development by Housemarque.
