To celebrate Super Mario Bros. 35th anniversary, Nintendo held a Mario themed Direct announcing new games, ports, and all kinds of Mario themed paraphernalia. Included in the surprise Direct was the announcement of the long-rumored Super Mario 3D All-Stars.
The game celebrates the 3D era of Mario games by including Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy in one package for the Nintendo Switch. Much to the ire of fans, however, Super Mario 3D All-Stars will have a limited physical and digital release with Nintendo announcing the collection is only available until March 2021.
The announcement of limited quantities has brought scalpers out of the woodwork with many listings already on websites like eBay and Kijiji at absurd prices. On Twitter, @SpawnWaveMedia Tweeted some found listings with an increase of up to $50 more than the suggested retail price. When released, Super Mario 3D All-Stars will retail for $59.99.
While many fans will no doubt avoid listings such as these, it’s common for these listings to still sell. Those in need of a copy come winter holiday will be willing to pay the higher cost to get a copy to their loved ones. Though not on the same front, Nintendo also announced a limited time release for Super Mario Bros. 35, a new battle royale game for Nintendo Switch Online. The digital release will also only be available until March, though Nintendo has not stated a reason why.
As expected, the announcement has been met with confusion from fans, especially on the digital front. While limited physical copies is quite common for games, digital storefronts have no max quantities or production lines to worry about. Many fans wonder what Nintendo has planned beyond March with some saying the games will be sold separately and at higher price points. Other theories suggest Nintendo is taking a Disney Vault approach to Super Mario 3D All-Stars, keeping prices high for the collection due to its limited availability.
Meanwhile, Nintendo’s 2021 plans with Mario seem to be off to a good start with the release of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury in February. The game will not only bring the much beloved Wii U platformer to the Switch audience, but also include new content focused on Bowser, though it is unknown what the content will entail. Alongside Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will be 2 new amiibo, featuring both Cat Mario and Cat Peach. Typically, amiibo will unlock content or provide bonuses in the game represented but no announcement has been made in what that involves in the new game quite yet.
Super Mario 3D All-Stars will launch on September 18 on Nintendo Switch.
