Fall Guys may be one of the hottest games right now, but it’s not the only game that’s seen an explosion in popularity lately. There’s also Among Us, the social deception game from indie studio InnerSloth. It’s one of the many colorful and chaotic alternatives to Fall Guys, and it’s become incredibly successful in its own right.
For the uninitiated, Among Us challenges teams of 4-10 players to repair a space station by completing various tasks, all while trying to weed out the players that are secretly impostors trying to kill them off. The game, originally released in 2018, has had a modest following throughout the years, but it wasn’t until this summer that the game finally gained mainstream exposure. It’s become so popular as a result, in fact, that it recently hit 1.5 million concurrent users across its different versions, according to InnerSloth.
Awesome though it may be, this rapid success, unfortunately, comes with a downside, as it has left the small development team behind Among Us working overtime to accommodate the massive surge in players. InnerSloth’s sole programmer, co-founder Forest Willard, assured fans that there is a plan to improve the game’s matchmaking, but it will take the better part of a week to implement the necessary changes.
As it stands, Among Us wasn’t originally designed to handle the player-base it has now, but Willard stressed that the recently-announced sequel, Among Us 2, will be developed with the current matchmaking issues in mind.
