Animal Crossing: New Horizons Mostly Played By Adults | Game Rant

Animal Crossing: New Horizons becomes loved by just about everyone who gets ahold of the game, with the Nintendo-exclusive New Horizons dominating sales charts around the world. Recently, Animal Crossing director Aya Kyogoku shared statistics on who exactly is buying the game.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons was designed by a team built up of an even number of male and female developers, with the mindset being that an equal amount of men and women will be playing the game so people of both genders should design it. As it turns out, this was smart logic on the part of Kyoguku and the team, as the data shows “the ratio of males and females” is an even split.

Given the diverse items within the game, which will be growing more varied thanks to a Super Mario update next year, this statistic is not too surprising. Kyoguku went on to describe that most people likely view Animal Crossing: New Horizons as “a game where you can live leisurely with cute animals” and “a game for young girls.” This data does help disprove the “girls” part of that assumption, but the more interesting bit of data also goes against the “young” stereotype.

According to Kyoguku, the players enjoying a game of Rugby in New Horizons likely are not kids. According to the New Horizons director, many users spending time in the game are in their 20s and 30s. Kyoguku states that many children have not had the chance to purchase the game since it hasn’t even been out for a year, nor has it seen its time as a gift during the holiday season. The game is no doubt popular among kids, but adults seem to find just as much enjoyment on their Islands.

Kyoguku ends his discussion of the statistics by saying that it is important for the series to evolve with the gaming industry. The growing number of adult gamers throughout the world deserve an Animal Crossing experience they can enjoy too, and given these statistics, New Horizons seems to provide just that. Clearly men and women of all ages are enjoying the game and stressing out about filling their Critterpedia with September’s new bugs.

The team’s careful design in making a game for everyone shows clearly with Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ villager design and item catalogs. That effort has truly paid off, as the massive success and ever-growing popularity of the game can likely be attributed to its large target audience as much as its quality.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now on Nintendo Switch.
