Big Sonic the Hedgehog Announcements Planned for 30th Anniversary

After years of disappointments, Sonic the Hedgehog seemed destined to become one of gaming’s biggest retired franchises. Thankfully, though, both the character and the series have seen a major resurgence in recent years. The once-loved blue hero has become popular among gamers once again, and SEGA seems eager to keep releasing new Sonic content going forward.

While SEGA’s plans to discuss Sonic this year were initially delayed by COVID-19, an advertisement found in Licensing Source Book Europe has confirmed that the character’s future will be explored in 2021. While the ad mostly features comments on the success of the franchise, such as the series bringing in $6 billion in revenue and selling 920 million copies, the section on the 30th anniversary proves interesting.

While there is nothing within the post about Sonic’s supposed sister appearing, new games are confirmed. What these games will look and play like is unclear, as SEGA may continue in the path of 3D games like Sonic Forces or return to the more familiar realm of 2D. Regardless, it is exciting to know that more Sonic games are on the way, as the past few entries in the series have done a great job of restoring the blue blur’s reputation.

Seeing some classic Sonic games remastered or even remade would be great, as the Sonic series getting treatment like Mario’s 35th anniversary would be great for old school fans. This would certainly fall in line with the “major announcements” mentioned in the advertisement, and given that more than one game is supposedly coming, remasters of classic Sonic titles are not out of the realm of possibility. What games would come if this were to happen is anyone’s guess, but anything other than Sonic 2006 would likely go over well with the Sonic community.

It is worth noting that the surprisingly successful Sonic movie was also mentioned in the ad, but only in terms of its monetary success. Still, it would not be surprising if one of the digital events mentioned for Sonic news in 2021 featured official details on a sequel. Until they come, though, those who enjoyed the live-action adaptation of the speedster can see just how ugly Sonic could have looked in the film.

Perhaps whatever content releases next year will allow some of the lesser-known characters in the Sonic series to shine. Even if the new games focus only on the fan favorites, though, Sonic fans will clearly have a lot to look forward to in 2021 based on this SEGA advertisement.
