Concept Art Surfaces for Canceled Left 4 Dead Successor

Ever since the heavily-rumored third Left 4 Dead failed to see the light of day, many wondered what was next for the game’s developer, Turtle Rock Studios. The team went on to make Evolve back in 2015 but the game never really managed to catch on like its zombie-massacring predecessors, both of which are now heralded as some of the most iconic PC releases of all time.

However, if a new video documenting the team’s work between 2015 and 2016 is to be believed, Turtle Rock wasn’t as keen to move away from the triple-A scene as many first thought, with the beloved studio allegedly dreaming up a brand new Left 4 Dead successor. The game was called Invaders, and saw players tasked with fending off an alien invasion that was ravaging the United Kingdom.

According to YouTube channel Unforgotten Games, the core concept of Invaders was to thwart a race of extraterrestrial beings as the general populace of Great Britain, with players able to jump into the boots of a variety of characters with unique skills, weapons, and abilities. It sounds very Left 4 Dead, with the addition of some brutal boss fights including a giant Alien mothership that players had to conquer at the campaign’s climax. The video also claims that fully destructible environments were being toyed with too, likely for giant alien foes such as the Mothership. Better yet, there’s concept art to support the channel’s claims, with the images highlighting the player characters, menacing alien threats, and even one of the game’s locations. It looks like Invaders had a more animated style than Left 4 Dead or Evolve, especially through its roster of wacky protagonists.

Of course, it’s worth taking Unforgotten Games’ video with a grain of salt for the time being. While the concept art definitely provides some evidence for the channel’s claims, there’s little additional information about where the video’s information was sourced, which is fishy seeing as the footage has come from a YouTuber with a small following. Regardless, those who want to see the leaked images for Invaders can do so on concept artist Anthony Sixto’s page, which you can find here.

While Invaders is likely just another project lost to time, Turtle Rock Studios will be making its big comeback with Back 4 BloodAs the title hints, the game will seemingly be a spiritual sequel to the Left 4 Dead franchise, seeing Turtle Rock return to the style of gameplay that made them such a popular gaming sensation. If the early information is anything to go by, the company could be set to make a huge comeback.
