With the next-generation on the horizon, it’s still unclear how differents games will be following the major jump in hardware. Of course, fans know the consoles will include brand new SSDs that will make for unparalleled load times and their ability to play games in stunning 4K cannot be overlooked, but how will a release on the PlayStation 4 look compared to one running on a PlayStation 5?
One game that’s looking to tread the line between both the current and next-generation consoles is War Mongrels, which has just received a brand new gameplay trailer during the Realms Deep 2020 event. The concept sees players travel back to World War 2, as they play two German deserters navigating their way through a war-stricken country.
The gameplay itself looks a lot like the recently released Desperados 3, seeing players engage in real-time stealth-action encounters. Enemies all have cones of vision that the pair of former-soldiers need to navigate around, using distractions, silent takedowns, and disguises to achieve their goal. If they’re spotted, however, they’ll have the chance to fight back, with the trailer claiming that combat phases see the player shift into a twin-stick shooter style that they can use to gun down foes. That being said, the team advise that players should only use this as a last resort, with ammo being limited and enemies taking players down quickly.
The game won’t solely focus on combat encounters though, with developer Destructive Creations sharing some early story details that seem to paint a fairly in-depth and politically-rich narrative. According to the studio, the main character of War Mongrels is Manfred, who was once a committed German soldier who wholeheartedly agreed with his comrade’s beliefs. Allegedly, a traumatic event during Manfred’s two-year stint on the Eastern Front changed his perspective, with the military forcing him to kill unarmed civilians while on a mission. He’s joined by Ewald, a Polish-Silesian Miner who was drafted into the military despite never being drawn in by the German propaganda. The friendship between both seems like the core thread that ties War Mongrels together.
The gameplay itself doesn’t boast the visual fidelity associated with most next-generation titles, but it definitely offers a unique experience that will manage to carve an interesting niche for itself on the new consoles. The game is set to launch this year at an as of yet unspecified date, so hopefully, those interested won’t have to wait long to get stuck in.
War Mongrels is set to release later this year on PC, Playstation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series.
