The original Doom was released in 1993 and it did a great deal to further the first-person shooter genre. In fact, Doom was so popular when it was released that many used the term Doom-shooter rather than a first-person shooter. While the original doesn’t compare to the visuals of the acclaimed Doom Eternal, many still enjoy the game and some have even made it operate on unconventional objects. A Twitter user has now shared a way of playing Doom with possibly the oddest device.
Doom originally used odd sources for its sound effects and features. With that in mind, it seems fitting that fans of the title are using unconventional methods to play the game. There have been versions of the game on a ATM but very few would have thought to use a pregnancy test as a platform for the game. Nonetheless, Twitter user Foone has managed to do this with some success despite the title looking slightly different.
The pregnancy test is used as a screen and it shows Doom in white pixels that manage to recreate the geography of the game. While the platform lacks the graphics of the original, it is surprisingly impressive that the game can technically be played in such a way. The pregnancy test seems to act as a screen and a keyboard is still required to input action but this is still a unique success given the technological limitations of a pregnancy test. It is unclear how much time it took to achieve the new way to play the game but it seems to be entertaining fans of the game as well as a broader audience. It should be noted that Foone frequently edits technology for new purposes and this is on-brand for the content creator. With that said, it may be one of their most impressive achievements.
This incredible feat comes on the back of fans making Doom available inside Minecraft as well through other unconventional means. Given the experimentation that is being utilized in an attempt to continue the internet trend of playing the title in strange ways, it will be interesting to see what comes next.
Fans have always created unique content with Doom and this trend looks set to continue. Whether its unique ways to play the original title or fan art, it is evident that the games have managed to retain a dedicated audience twenty-seven years after the initial release.
