For the past few weeks, League of Legends players have been on the edge of their seats watching the LCS Summer Split playoffs. Because of 2020’s new LCS format, the top 3 teams in summer directly decide who represents North America at this year’s World Championship. While the teams had already been confirmed since last week, today’s epic struggle was to decide NA’s first seed.
After years of roster changes and the return of familiar players, TSM’s roster of Broken Blade, Spica, Bjergsen, Doublelift, and Biofrost finished 4th in the regular season. However, the team was quickly sent to the lower playoff bracket where they won over 20 matches to get back into the finals.
On the other hand, FlyQuest’s roster had been one of the stronger teams throughout Spring and Summer as well as the only one to make both finals. With the stories and hype surrounding both teams, this series was one League of Legends players will remember forever since it ultimately resulted in TSM’s first trophy since Summer 2017 and record-setting 7th overall.
In the first 2 games, TSM got off to an early lead with back-to-back victories off key picks like Bjergsen’s Zilean. However, FlyQuest returned with a vengeance in games 3 and 4 to outplay their opponents and tie up the series at 2-2 . With Silver Scrapes playing loudly in the background, the final match came down to TSM’s splitpush comp against FlyQuest’s lineup which had teamfighters like Orianna and Leona.
At the start of game 5, FlyQuest managed to get first blood and the first 2 drakes. But on the other side of the map, TSM was playing towards their splitpush strength with constant pressure and ganks in the top lane. During the mid-game, a catch on FlyQuest’s midlaner led to TSM taking multiple turrets that strengthened their map control. Later on, an initially bad teamfight turned in TSM’s favor resulted in nearly acing FlyQuest and securing Baron. This was the point of no return as TSM eventually pushed into FlyQuest’s base on all 3 sides and finished off the Nexus.
Long-time TSM fans will recognize how much this victory means to veterans Bjergsen and Doublelift, the latter having the most titles in LCS history. However, this win wasn’t because of any single player or champion, but everyone stepping up to carry with their own individual moments over the entire season.
With today’s triumph, TSM has secured NA’s first seed at the group stage for Worlds 2020. As a result, FlyQuest is now the LCS second seed while Team Liquid is the third seed that has to qualify through the play-in stage at Shanghai.
