Marvel’s Avengers kicks off with an exciting campaign that sees Kamala Khan setting out on a task to find out what AIM is up to and possibly helping the Avengers reassemble along the way. The campaign is only around ten hours or so long, but a lot of mystery, action, and tension is packed into that tight experience.
Along the way, one of the earliest mysteries that is introduced is the identity of Tiny Dancer. Within the first moments after the prologue, players see Kamala receive a mysterious communication from someone whose handle is Tiny Dancer. The identity of this mysterious online presence carries through the early hours of Marvel’s Avengers as Kamala sets off on her journey to find out what AIM is really up to.
Before we dive into the answers and talk more about the Tiny Dancer mystery, consider this the final spoiler warning. Spoilers for the later hours of the Marvel’s Avengers campaign mode follow…
Interestingly, the Tiny Dancer mystery mirrors a plot device that was used in the iconic Bruce Jones run on The Incredible Hulk and then again in Marvel’s 2008 The Incredible Hulk film. In both of those stories Bruce was receiving hints from a mysterious online chat with someone who had a hidden identity (and he himself also had a mysterious codename for the chats). This led a lot of players to think that perhaps Bruce was Tiny Dancer early on in the game, but players only need to make it through the first two hours to realize that is definitely not the case.
The second popular guess was right on the money: Black Widow. Thanks to the MCU referencing Black Widow’s memories of studying ballet as a child, lots of fans already associate Natasha with dancing and made the connection to Tiny Dancer. About halfway through the game’s campaign Kamala gets herself caught by heading on a prison breakout mission by herself and Black Widow needs to drop her deep cover in AIM to help break Kamala out.
During her time under cover, Black Widow had been working within AIM as a covert operative to learn more about what the organization was up to while she fed details to the resistance back at the Ant Hill. In the moments after the players first enter the Avengers Initiative side of the game, Nat jokes that this years long mission wasn’t even close to her longest undercover job.
For a short campaign, Marvel’s Avengers is full of these little secrets and mysterious that really help pull the player through the core narrative from. When “what really happened to Captain America?” to “What is AIM’s true mission?” players have lots to learn throughout the campaign. Hopefully that sort of engaging narrative can stick around as new heroes become available and receive their own story missions in the Avengers Initiative.
