Nvidia‘s latest line of graphics cards are taking the gaming community by storm. Despite some criticism from players who invested in Nvidia’s previous generation of chips, many have expressed their excitement for the 30-series cards’ massive leap in performance. However, despite Nvidia’s promotion of 8K gaming at its most recent reveal for the GeForce RTX 3090, reports are indicating that these advances come with some caveats.
According to a report from Tom’s Hardware, Nvidia has released more details about how 8K gaming will work on the RTX 3090. Although players will be able to play in 8K at 60FPS, they will require an 8K monitor to do so. The report says this requirement is impractical for common households; but it also reminds readers that Nvidia is targeting content creators who want to record and edit higher-definition videos with the GeForce RTX 3090.
Nvidia also named some games that can render at 8K using the 3090, including Apex Legends, Destiny 2, Forza Horizon 2, Rainbow Six Siege, Rocket League, World of Tanks, and World of Warcraft. However, its chart also indicated many titles did not necessarily incorporate every major improvement that the RTX 3090 has to offer. Specifically, several titles have no “ultra” high graphics settings, and none of the listed titles support ray tracing.
In order to use ray tracing in 8K for titles like Control or Death Stranding, users will need Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) version 2.1, which uses machine learning to enhance game rendering. Version 2.1 now supports 8K gaming with dynamic scaling to enhance games graphics even further. The 3090’s 9x scaling can make graphics nine times larger, which alongside 8K support is a massive improvement from DLSS’ previous capabilities.
Although the differences might be more subtle than expected, Tom’s Hardware notes that its writer could see the sharper graphics when Nvidia showed off Death Stranding‘s 8K gameplay. Ultimately, while the publication praises the RTX 3090’s impressive advances, it also expresses reservations about the GPU’s practicality for everyday gamers.
Other reports have come to a similar conclusion, pointing to the GeForce RTX 3090’s high price tag. However, one cannot deny the latest generation’s ubiquitous use of ray tracing, which was previously considered a novelty. Although gamers may not see the immediate benefits of Nvidia‘s latest generation of graphics cards, they will hopefully encourage developers to test the limits of existing technology and create some truly revolutionary titles.
