It’s no secret that one of the most highly requested DLC characters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is Goku, but unfortunately that will probably never happen. In fact, series creator Masahiro Sakurai has already confirmed to fans that it won’t, making it clear that in order to be considered as a DLC character for the game, the character must have originated from a video game. Goku has video games about him, such as this year’s Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, but he is first and foremost a manga character and then an anime character. Despite all this, there is one character from that game that theoretically could be DLC for Smash Ultimate.
One of the many claims to fame that Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot used during its marketing was the introduction of a new, original character created by that series’ creator, Akira Toriyama, himself. Of course, this in reference to Bonyu, the former member of the Ginyu Force that players can train against with the help of Android 21’s Training Room. The fact that Bonyu was created for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot puts her in a unique position, as her franchise is not originally a video game, but her character is.
Sakurai clarified his stance on non-video game characters in Smash at 2019’s Tokyo Game Show, explaining that Smash “…will only have content from video games in it.” Since Sakurai calls out Goku by name just before giving this example, it’s clear that he means characters that started out as video game characters. Even this isn’t entirely clear, though, as there are actually several characters aside from Bonyu that were created specifically for Dragon Ball Z games, meaning theoretically they could meet the criteria to be added in as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC characters.
Though Bonyu is first to come to mind as she is the most recent original character in a Dragon Ball Z game, Mira and Towa also fit the bill. These two have made appearances in Dragon Ball Online and more notably Dragon Ball Xenoverse, and would qualify as they originated in a video game. Another great example of this would be Android 21, who debuted in Dragon Ball FighterZ and is often considered one of the best things to come out of that game’s story. Xenoverse in particular introduced many new characters including the Supreme Kai of Time Chronoa and Demon Lord Demigra.
Of course, it should be said that while these characters technically may qualify, it is highly unlikely that they would even be considered for addition. For starters, they do still belong to a franchise that initiated as an anime, even if they made their first appearances within video games. Additionally, none of these characters, with the exception of Android 21 perhaps, are popular enough to justify adding them to Smash Bros. It’s interesting to fantasize about that sort of thing happening, but fans would do well to keep their hopes and expectations as low as possible.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot sidelined Bonyu and that was her debut appearance, so it would be strange for her to get more love outside of that. Towa and Mira definitely play a more prominent role as villains in the world of Dragon Ball Z now, but they still lack the iconic nature that Goku or Vegeta have. Finally, though she is beloved, the story from which Android 21 hails is often considered one of the worst stories in a Dragon Ball game, and her fighting style may not match up with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate‘s cast all too well.
