There has been no shortage of Destiny 2: Beyond Light news recently, as Bungie shares details about the Hunter Stasis subclass called the Revenant. Bungie’s post talks about designing the new Stasis subclass as well as the core abilities available to Hunter players.
This completes the three-piece blog series on the upcoming Destiny 2 Stasis subclasses. A lot has been shared but there’s still much to discover about features like customization. Bungie prefers to keep some things secret and let players find out on their own, so fans might not get much more Stasis subclass news until launch.
It’s said from the beginning that it was hard to solidify the fantasy of this subclass with an easy to understand concept, unlike the Warlock’s subclass which was dubbed “ice wizard” from the start. After many iterations, the studio decided to frame the Hunter Revenant around the style of a ninja, and focus on giving players the ability to control a battle by luring enemies, slowing combat and creating cover opportunities.
The super ability is called Silence & Squall, and it lets the player summon two Kama blades to hurl at a group of enemies. This is a rather involved ability, so it consists of two perks, each one describing what one of the Kama blades does. One perk is named Deadly Edge and makes the first blade thrown shatter on impact and freeze enemies caught inside the large blast zone.
The other perk, called Stasis Storm, states that the second Kama blade impales itself on a surface or enemy before exploding. When it does, a homing Stasis tornado is sent from the blast to nearby enemies, damaging, slowing, and freezing them if it makes contact for long enough.
This super is somewhat similar to the top tree Nightstalker tether since it is another crowd control ability that incapacitates multiple enemies at once. Hunters also get another unique projectile in the form of a melee ability. It is called Withering Blade and it lets the player throw a shuriken that can bounce off multiple surfaces and enemies, damaging and slowing targets it touches.
If two shurikens land on the same target it becomes frozen immediately. This can be achieved by giving two charges to the melee ability through customization or having two Stasis Hunters hit the same foe. Revenants can also get a pseudo melee ability if they use the Shatterdive Aspect. While having it equipped, the player can hold down the crouch keybind when in the air to descend straight down and shatter frozen enemies they land near.
To refresh what was discussed in a previous post, Aspects and Fragments are relic items players will discover out in the world. Aspects grant brand new abilities and effects, and are class-specific. Fragments modify or enhance abilities with passive perks and are class agnostic, but do come with stat penalties from time to time.
One Fragment shown is the Whisper of Hedrons, which grants a buff to weapon damage after freezing an enemy with the Stasis element. The Fragment also subtracts 10 Strength points from the player’s total when equipped. To cap off the Hunter abilities, a new dodge was revealed that slows nearby enemies on activation. This might be especially useful with the “Double Dodge” granted by The Sixth Coyote exotic Hunter chest piece.
Later on, Bungie detailed every base Stasis grenade, all of which are shared across the three classes. The first one is Duskfield, which creates a Stasis bubble on impact and pulls enemies into it as time passes. Once inside, foes are slowed and eventually frozen, unless they escape the field quickly enough.
The Coldsnap Grenade explodes when hitting an enemy or the floor, releasing a Stasis wave that targets up to 3 enemies. This moves across the floor towards the nearest enemy and freezes it on contact before searching for the next one.
Last but certainly not least, the ice wall grenade that has been all the rage was been fully revealed. Called the Glacier Grenade, it shoots out a wall of Stasis crystal from the ground upon impact, encasing enemies caught inside the structure. Shattering the wall then creates a damaging area-of-effect blast.
Bungie states that the team has paid special care to make sure these unique abilities do not disrupt the PvP and PvE environment negatively. It is the first time an element has been added to Destiny post-launch, so regardless of what happens it will be a new experience for fans and developers alike.
Destiny 2: Beyond Light is available on November 10 for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
