For months, rumors have swirled that Microsoft has a secondary next-generation console waiting in the wings, which was to be a cheaper, all-digital alternative to the Xbox Series X. The rumors were confirmed overnight, when Microsoft officially announced the Xbox Series S, showing off the new console’s design and revealing some of its other features. Similarly to what happened to both the Xbox Series X and Sony’s PlayStation 5, it didn’t take long for the Internet to start making memes mocking the new console.
One of the more impressive Xbox Series S memes that has been posted online comes from Twitter user FourScore64, who posted an Xbox Series S redesigned to look like Plankton from the SpongeBob SquarePants TV show. The design turns the Xbox Series S green, with Plankton’s big yellow eye and a green Xbox controller to match. And instead of calling it the Xbox Series S, it’s called the Xbox Series Z, with the tagline “Ravioli ravioli give me the formuoli.” The tweet has nearly 5,000 likes so far.
While this Plankton-themed Xbox Series S console is unlikely to ever materialize, it is quite possible that Microsoft will release themed Xbox Series S and Series X consoles of its own. After all, Microsoft released a ton of limited edition, themed Xbox One consoles over the course of its lifespan, just recently revealing Wonder Woman 1984-themed Xbox consoles.
While fans are quick to poke fun at the Xbox Series S console design, the general consensus seems to be that the new console is a good idea on the part of Microsoft. The Xbox Series S is just $299, but it will be able to play next-generation Xbox games. There are some drawbacks, including the lack of a disc drive, but overall, the Xbox Series X represents a relatively low-cost alternative to joining the next-generation of gaming consoles.
The surprisingly low Xbox Series S price is an interesting strategy on the part of Microsoft, and more or less ensures that it will have a next-generation console on the market at the lowest price point. That is of course unless Sony decides to release the PS5 digital edition at $299, which seems highly unlikely.
Rumors are that Sony will announce the PS5 price and release date as early as today or tomorrow, so fans may have a big announcement to look forward to. In the meantime, they can also expect Microsoft to finalize its next-generation release plans sooner rather than later.
