Nintendo’s surprise announcement of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity has fans teetering in excitement. The prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild looks incredible in the trailer and Nintendo has released some official screenshots of the game to satiate fans.
Taking place in the timeline 100 years before Breath of the Wild‘s main storyline, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will tell the story of the great war against Ganon and his forces. During the war, Hyrule used technology and the chosen champions to fight against the calamity in a battle for the kingdom.
Screenshots of the game reveal Hyrule in a pristine state, much different than the ravaged Hyrule featured in the 2017 game. Link joins forces with Daruk, Mipha, Revali, and Urbosa facing off against Ganon’s army and Guardians that have been reprogrammed. The chosen champions each represent the different races found in the game and look to utilize the Divine Beast’s to defeat the great evil.
The first screenshot shows our heroes facing off against the approaching enemy forces. While Breath of the Wild featured some flashbacks to the great war, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will showcase the war in full, telling the story that leads to Link’s eventual slumber in the sarcophagus. Given the look on each of their faces, things are about to get serious.
The second image shows Hyrule Castle before the war has started. Those who completed Breath of the Wild know that Hyrule castle itself serves as the game’s final dungeon, taken over by hordes of enemies and in ruins. During Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity the King of Hyrule is alive and well along with the residents of the castle so exploring the castle before the war may be possible.
Princess Zelda and Princess Mipha, the Zora Champion, are featured in this image looking at the Sheikah Slate. The device will later be used by Link as he navigates Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild by setting waypoints, taking photos, and navigating his inventory. No word yet on what the device will do in the new game, given Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a hack and slash.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity‘s surprise announcement also comes with a bonus for those who pre-order the game, but with an odd catch. Pre-ordering the digital version of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will net players the Lucky Ladle weapon usable by Link from the start of the game. Bonuses for using the Lucky Ladle are currently unknown but players who purchase the physical edition will have to purchase the ladle as DLC.
Nintendo’s 2020 lineup just keeps getting better. Despite Covid-19 hindering release schedules Nintendo has managed to announce and release exclusive games in very short windows. Just last week Nintendo announced Super Mario 3D All-Stars, a collection of 3 classic Mario games releasing September 18, and now with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, the holiday lineup is a big contender
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity launches on Nintendo Switch on November 20.
