Madden NFL 21 has been been at the center of attention after several controversies around the game. Though Electronic Arts has been attempting to do better by fans, there is still much that players want to see for the franchise. However, some recent changes have been getting mixed responses from the player base.
Even though Madden NFL 21 has not been out for long, fans have been speaking out about the lack of updates and changes from the franchise. Some changes had been made, and Electronics Arts added Franchise Mode, a game mode that players have been begging to be included for years. However, the mode seemed to be little more than a patch for the game, and while EA attempting to fix this, fans are still not happy with what is being done to the EA exclusive franchise.
On September 8, EA added Colin Kaepernick back to the franchise, and many gamers believe this was done to curry favor with fans. Originally, EA removed him from Madden NFL 19 and even took the mention of his name out of a song in the soundtrack after Kaepernick controversially kneeled during the national anthem before football games.
Kaepernick also moved from 74 overall in Madden NFL 17 to 81 overall in Madden NFL 21, and some who follow the franchise are saying that this overestimates the NFL quarterback’s skills. While some are excited to see Kaepernick back in the game, many are unhappy with how this decision was made.
Some fans are saying that EA isn’t properly addressing the earlier removal of Kaepernick from the franchise, while others say that this is a political stunt to garner popularity since fans have been showing their unhappiness with the game on Metacritic. Regardless, the NFL player is being added to the game, and while this move has received some praise, Madden NFL has a long ways to go to get back the players’ respect that the series once had.
Many fans who want to see the games improve have been calling on the NFL to cease EA’s exclusive rights to the football league’s video games, as the gaming company’s monopoly on this market has affected the quality of the games. However, since this contract was just extended, it appears that this won’t be possible for the time being. For the time being, EA should continue trying to differentiate Madden NFL 21 from the previous games in the series and show the fans it can still create good games for the franchise.
Madden NFL 21 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with plans for PS5, Stadia, and Xbox Series X support later this year.
