Marvel’s Avengers may be a live-service game, but it also features a story campaign. And as pointed out in many Marvel’s Avengers reviews, the story is one of its strongest aspects. However, some fans may be somewhat confused about exactly what happened at the end, as some things are left a little ambiguous in order to set things up for future story content.
And like the Marvel Cinematic Universe that clearly inspired it, Marvel’s Avengers even features some post-credits scenes to decipher as well. To delve into everything that happened, this post will have MAJOR SPOILERS for Marvel’s Avengers, so those that have yet to play through it should turn back now.
Here is what happened during the Marvel’s Avengers ending.
Throughout the course of the Marvel’s Avengers campaign, players learn more about what exactly happened during A-Day. A-Day, for the uninitiated, is the disaster at the beginning of the game that saw the creation of the Inhumans and Captain America seemingly killed. Later, the Avengers discover Captain America alive on the Ambrosia satellite, and it’s revealed that AIM scientist Monica Rappaccini has been harvesting his superhuman blood for her experiments. Not only that, but Captain America’s blood has been injected into AIM leader George Tarleton, slowly transforming him into MODOK.
Other important revelations around A-Day include Rappaccini being the mastermind behind the entire thing, as she was the one that hired Taskmaster to steal the Terrigen Crystal that was being used to power the Avengers’ Chimera ship. This in turn triggered a sequence of events that saw the Terrigen Crystal start pulling up a mysterious object from the ocean. Realizing the size of the object would completely wipe out San Francisco, Captain America destroyed the Terrigen Crystal reactor, blowing up the Chimera in the process.
MODOK discovers the truth about his origins, and so he injects Rappaccini with the same formula she had been giving him in an effort to kill her. He then sets out to spread the DARK Terrigen mist that AIM had developed to kill all of the Inhumans. The reassembled Avengers then head to San Francisco, where they assault MODOK’s base and eventually confront him as part of the game’s final boss fight.
By working together, the Avengers are ultimately able to defeat MODOK. However, MODOK manages to bring up the mysterious object that the Terrigen Crystal tried to surface during A-Day: a massive Kree Sentry robot. MODOK takes control of the Kree Sentry, which turns the tide in the fight against the Avengers.
Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, manages to use her Embiggen powers to become giant, and she uses her newfound strength to fight back against the Kree Sentry. Kamala manages to destroy the Kree Sentry, and MODOK falls out into the ocean, presumably killed. Kamala is then able to reunite with her father while also remaining a member of the Avengers team.
Like the Marvel Cinematic Universe that clearly inspired Marvel’s Avengers‘ general tone, the game has some after-credits scenes that do a good job of setting the stage for future content. The first big revelation from these scenes is the reveal that Monica Rappaccini is in fact alive, having used a clone to trick MODOK previously. With MODOK gone, Rappaccini is now in charge of AIM as the company’s so-called Scientist Supreme, and she vows to continue its operations across the globe. Of course, this gives the Avengers plenty of reason to stay together, teaming with SHIELD to continue the fight against AIM’s forces.
The other big revelation from the Marvel’s Avengers after-credits scene has to do with the Kree Sentry. A hatch opens on the robot, and a mysterious pod shoots into space. What exactly is in this pod remains to be seen, but it’s possible this could be hinting at a future conflict between the Avengers and the Kree. Fans should find out more in future, as Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix have made it clear that they plan on expanding Marvel’s Avengers for some time to come.
The Marvel’s Avengers ending sets up two major things for the game moving forward. The most obvious is the fact that AIM is still a threat, which explains why the Avengers have to continue battling with AIM forces in the endgame missions. Fans can expect AIM to remain a consistent and persistent enemy in Marvel’s Avengers for the long haul, though it remains to be seen if MODOK will ever return to join their ranks again.
The other major development is the pod that shot out of the Kree Sentry. It’s possible that this will lead the Kree to Earth, and they may become a new enemy type for players to contend with in Marvel’s Avengers. Or maybe players will just face off against some specific Kree. Alternatively, this could be what ultimately brings Captain Marvel back into the fold, as her story is directly tied to the Kree. While it’s unclear exactly how the Kree will be figured into Marvel’s Avengers, it seems like a safe bet that they will have some kind of presence in the game in future content updates.
Marvel’s Avengers is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
