The long rumored Xbox Series S has now officially been announced by Microsoft, but not before leaks revealed the new console to the world before the company was ready. It’s uncertain how long Microsoft was planning to wait before sharing the details of its new Xbox series but the company has been rolling with the punches and even took the leaks with a sense of humor.
The Xbox Series S has been a long-rumored low budget option for the next generation Xbox. Now that Microsoft has released official information it’s been confirmed that the Xbox Series S will be the smallest Xbox console ever and will launch at a lower price point of $299. While other details are scarce right now, the Xbox Twitter account promised that more information would be coming soon. Leaks about the Xbox Series X have also been spreading but nothing has been confirmed by Microsoft as yet.
The leaks about the new Xbox Series spread across the internet faster than could be controlled, but instead of attempting to discredit them, Microsoft took the hit with good humor. Prior to the official confirmation, the Xbox twitter account posted the ‘awkward puppet’ meme as news around the next-gen Xbox Series’ started to trend. It’s an obvious inconvenience for the company that the consoles were outed before the official announcements could be made, but leaks are a pretty common occurrence in the gaming industry these days and at least Microsoft was willing to share a joke about it with the fans.
Price details about the other next-gen console, the Xbox Series X, are still yet to be officially announced but leaks for the Series X surfaced at the same time as those for the Series S. It’s possible that Microsoft may now choose to announce details for the Series X sooner rather than later in order to confirm or debunk these leaks. It’s also unknown what the differences between the Series S and Series X consoles will be, but it’s likely that the two will be comparable to the differences between the current Xbox One S and Xbox One X consoles.
The next-gen console war between Microsoft and Sony has been all over the place this year as both companies seek to launch new consoles in Holiday 2020. There are only a few months to go until the planned launch window but neither next-gen console has an official release date or price point. With the release of this information about the Xbox Series S it’s possible that the silence has now been broken and Sony could choose to respond with details about the new PlayStation 5 in the coming weeks.
The Xbox Series S and the Xbox Series X will launch in Holiday 2020.
