Ever since the early 2000s, Nolan North has become one of the most sought after voice actors in the video game industry. During his long career as a voice actor spanning two decades, Nolan North has had numerous video games under his belt, and he is often praised for his portrayal of a wide variety of characters.
Right now, Nolan’s latest project is providing the voice work for Iron Man aka Tony Stark in Marvel’s Avengers. Of course, while his portrayal of Iron Man in the latest game is already earning praise from die-hard Marvel fans, here is a breakdown of all the other iconic characters that North has portrayed in video games.
Assassin’s Creed fans would probably remember Desmond Miles, who is the guy who went into the animus from the original Assassin’s Creed up until Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag anyway, as he dies in AC3. His involvement in the Assassin’s Creed franchise spanned six games in total, making this the longest series that North has voiced a character. Apart from Desmond Miles, North also provided the voice work for Abbas Sofian in the first game, and Adam, who is the ancestor of Desmond, during flashback sequences featuring Adam and Eve.
Although North is mostly known for his portrayal of video game protagonists, it is worth mentioning that he also portrayed some of the most iconic villains in video game history. One of his best works as a video game villain is his portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot in the Batman: Arkham series. Interestingly enough, not many people knew that North was behind the voice of the character, given how Penguin’s deep voice and heavy cockney accent differ from North’s natural voice. This just goes to show how talented of a voice actor he is, and certainly helped cement his reputation in the video game industry.
In 2008, Ubisoft Montreal rebooted the Prince of Persia franchise, introducing a new protagonist, new story, and new aesthetics. In this game, North played The Prince, which is just a moniker given that the protagonist does not hold any royal title whatsoever. Despite the game receiving mostly positive reviews combined with North’s flawless performance, the game did not receive a sequel, making it a one time stint for Nolan North.
In 2013, North returned to playing the villain when he portrayed David from The Last of Us. As expected, North’s portrayal of the psycho cannibal earned tons of praise from the video game community. The best thing about North’s portrayal of David is the way he smooth-talked Ellie at the beginning, earning her trust before revealing himself as the leader of the group of men that Joel and Ellie had to kill. North was able to portray the creepy factor so well, and it helped drive the storyline where players saw Ellie’s growth as a character, given that she was able to fend for herself without any help from Joel.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a complete breakdown of Nolan North’s popular role without mentioning his most iconic one. It is without a doubt that Nathan Drake from the Uncharted franchise is North’s most celebrated portrayal of a video game character. His performance of Nathan Drake, who is a formidable yet relatable protagonist, helped the character to win the affection of Uncharted fans. Since its release back in 2007, Uncharted became one of Sony’s most important franchises for the PlayStation thanks in part to North’s amazing performance of Nathan Drake. Interestingly enough, what made North’s portrayal of Drake such as success was the way he was able to put a little bit of himself in the character, which is why many fans equate Nathan Drake with Nolan North.
