As Bungie has stated numerous times in the past, Destiny 2: Beyond Light marks a fresh start for the popular looter shooter. Fans continue to learn more about the anticipated expansion from Bungie, including the three new subclasses based around the Darkness as well as some of the big changes coming to the game such as the UI and how triumphs are handled. However, some fans have started to pick up on some interesting clues this season, which may bring about more than a few shocking changes to the core game.
One Destiny 2 subReddit user noticed that after visiting The Tower, the game’s instance of a social space for players to meet up and interact with vendors, they were able to jump and stand on top of Commander Zavala’s head. This indicates that the character has a hit box, but what’s strange is the no other vendors has this as players can simply walk through them. While many theories emerged to try and explain why this is the case, one prevailing thought seems to link back to the rumor that Zavala may be seeing a massive change at some point in Beyond Light.
One of the big rumors surrounding Beyond Light is that Zavala is going to succumb to the dark influences of the Hive Witch-Queen, Savathun. While it seems unrealistic due to the personality of the character, it’s a theory that has gained a lot of momentum and even seems to be supported by ominous messages in the lore that is received from the Means to an End quest each week. Certain passages indicate a traitor is living at the tower and that the Ahamkara skull above Lord Shaxx is actually a relic slowly corrupting Zavala with Savathun’s words. Considering how righteous Zavala is, choosing him to be the one to fall to the Darkness would be quite the bait and switch, especially when most would assume Eris Morn would be the easy choice.
The twist, even though it’s been heavily hinted at by the community at this point, would be a massive shock for most players as Commander Zavala has been a main character since the original Destiny launched back in 2014. In addition, Zavala has been traditionally the one to push the protection of humanity and The Last City at any cost, almost to a stubbornly rigid degree. Granted, conflicts with The Taken War, the Red War, and the most recent conflict with the Darkness have seemingly started to leave a mark on the Awoken Titan, so something could definitely be transpiring.
Whether or not Zavala does become a puppet for Savathun, Bungie appears to be set on resuming another dangling plot thread from Forsaken. Uldren Sov, former Awoken Prince and Brother to Queen Mara, could be making his return to the game after having been killed for his murder of Cayde-6. Following a cutscene revealing his resurrection as a Guardian, Uldren has been missing in action, with only lore from Eververse items providing an update. Thankfully, the new Cosmodrome symbol in the UI matches directly with the symbol located on his armor, leading many to believe that the former villain could be the NPC merchant located in the new Cosmodrome space.
Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
