Microsoft has officially unveiled the Xbox Series S to the public. After over a month of rumors surrounding the console’s existence and role in Microsoft’s plans for the next generation of consoles, the technology titan finally responded to the speculation earlier today with an official reveal.
Shortly before this announcement, Microsoft confirmed the console’s existence on Twitter. However, after Microsoft’s confirmation, another Twitter user leaked the system’s planned world premiere trailer. Shortly after this reveal, Microsoft released the trailer on its own YouTube channel to show off the upcoming console’s impressive capabilities. In the trailer, Microsoft also revealed the Xbox Series S’s release date and price point to gamers alongside teasers for previously announced titles like Destiny 2: Beyond Light and Halo Infinite.
According to the previously leaked Xbox Series S trailer, it will be available for purchase on November 10. Microsoft also confirmed that the console’s leaked price of $299 was also correct in its new trailer. As previous speculation stated, the Xbox Series S is a smaller version of the long-anticipated Xbox Series X. In fact, marketing material has referred to the console as “the smallest Xbox ever.” Unlike its high-powered counterpart, the Series S is a digital-only console, and will not be able to use physical copies of games.
Now that Microsoft has confirmed the Xbox Series S‘ release date, players are also curious about whether the Xbox Series X will release on the same day, and if the leaks surrounding its price are true. Earlier today, a Windows Central report claimed that the Xbox Series X would debut on November 10. While Microsoft declined to comment on the leaks surrounding its other next-gen console, the fact that the Xbox Series S leaks provided the same release date may indicate that there may be a kernel of truth to this speculation.
As for gamers’ thoughts on the Series S, several responses to the YouTube trailer made fun of the console’s design, jokingly comparing it to a washing machine, a Covenant bomb, and a speaker. While some players dismissed the lighter Xbox because of its all-digital experience, others praised the Series S’ accomplishments, like its 1440p resolution and impressive frame rate at 120 fps.
Overall, Xbox’ prospects for the next generation of consoles seem bright. Currently, Microsoft has a viable, affordable alternative for next-generation gamers on a budget, and a new release date for the Xbox Series S that comes just in time for the holiday season. Since its major rival Sony has remained tight-lipped about its incoming PlayStation 5, gamers will have to wait and see what information emerges about the PS5 before weighing their options.
The Xbox Series S will be available on November 10, 2020.
