Many fans of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past can beat the game with their eyes closed. It is a classic on the Super Nintendo and in the franchise itself. As celebrated as this over two decade old game is, one has to remember that new fans are born every day.
There are many reasons why they might have missed this classic the first time around so guides are always in hot demand. The Desert Palace is the third dungeon in A Link to the Past and simply getting to it requires quite a bit of exploring. This guide will go through prep work along with determining the best route through the dungeon itself.
7 Before The Palace
Before Link can get into the Desert Palace, he has to complete a couple of prep steps along with some side quests. After getting the Pendant of Courage in the Eastern Palace, head on back to Sahasrahla. He will give Link the Pegasus Shoes, which will allow players to dash around. This unlocks a couple of new secret spots.
There is a rock pile next to Link’s house that has a bunch of fairies in it. If one has the net and two bottles from Kakariko Village, it might be a good idea to catch two fairies in this secret spot. Another rock pile can be found to the left of the church wherein one will find a Heart Piece.
6 First Steps
Moving onto the actual first step to unlocking the Desert Palace, head south of Kakariko Village. On this screen, the top left house is a library. Simply dash into the shelf with the green book on it and Link will now have the Book of Mudora. Now, head to the southwest corner of the map, the desert, and make the trek to the northwest where the Desert Palace can be found. Use the Book of Mudora on the stone tablet and the path will be unlocked.
In the dungeon itself, first head to the leftmost path. Kill any enemies that stand in Link’s way and head directly into the door ahead. In the room itself, head to the middle. Simply remove the pot to reveal a switch. Pressing it will reveal the chest with the dungeon map inside.
5 Lasers And Keys
Head out the same door and now go left. Go inside the northern door and be careful of the statue inside. If it spots the player it will shoot a laser and it does a lot of damage. The object needed in this room is the key on the upper left torch. Dash into the torch, grab the key and exit.
From this top screen, go all the way over to the right until Link hits a wall. Hug it down until one sees a keyed door. Unlock it, then head inside to reveal a trap. Players must defeat all enemies in order to exit along with dodging laser blasts again from the one-eyed statue. Before exiting, make sure to grab the compass in the chest.
4 The Power Glove
This next room can be a little tricky. On each side are cannons continually shooting balls across. If timed right, Link will be able to dash through unscathed. At the end is the Big Key. Once acquired, dash back the way this whole scenario started.
It’s time to head north, then left again, hugging the wall until the end of the road where players first got the key from first statue room. Players now need to go into the left door wherein there is yet another laser statute. The door switch is directly below the top left pot. Inside this next room is the Power Glove, which will allow Link to lift both small and large boulders. And no, it is not the failed NES peripheral.
3 Get Out
From here go back to the main hall, then head south and take the door to the left. In here is another palace exit. If Link is in need of hearts before leaving, the upper door in this room contains fairies. From the left side of the screen, push the third block down to open the door.
Once outside, hug the canyon wall, dash down, and grab the Heart Piece. Now dash all the way back to the top, hug the upper wall until Link sees the entryway blocked by rocks. Toss one aside and head in.
2 To The Boss
In this room, go to the right set of blocks. Push the bottom block to the left to unlock the door. This room can be trickier than any of the eyeball statue rooms because the floor will almost continually try to throw tiles at Link. All one needs is the key to exit, which is hidden underneath the bottom left pot.
The next few screens are fairly linear until reaching another trap room. Kill all enemies, then head out to the right. Make one’s way up as quickly as possible until coming to the set of four pots. There is a key in the third pot from the left. Use it to unlock the door to another tile room. The key here is hidden underneath the top right pot.
1 The Lanmolas
In this last room before the boss, simply kill the enemy with arrows then light all four torches. Once done, the exit will reveal itself to the boss room containing three Lanmolas. Simply use the sword and do one’s best to avoid their shots from underneath. Bombs might help, but they are honestly too slow to set as traps. Once dead, the Pendant of Wisdom will be won and then it’s off to Death Mountain.
