Becoming a raging issue following a number of sexual abuse allegations levied at some of the company’s top talent, Twitch has spent the last few months slowly but surely banning the numerous abusers streaming on its platform. From IAmSpoon and BlessRNG to ZeRo and Warwitch, the bans have been numerous and swift, seeing Twitch addressing the horrific allegations head-on and removing the names from its roster.
The latest in these bans came yesterday, with Twitch finally removing Cryaotic after he was accused of grooming young fans back in June of this year. Along with his channel no longer being available, Cryaotic’s partnership with the seminal streaming brand has been terminated, well and truly signaling that he no longer has a home with the platform.
For those who aren’t aware of Cryaotic’s allegations, numerous young women came forward to accuse the streamer of attempting to solicit sexual relationships with them despite being underage. The streamer eventually came forward to address the allegations, confirming they were authentic by stating he “cheated on [his] girlfriend with people who [he] didn’t realize were even underage in the first place.” He then tried to double back on the statement in the response video’s description, claiming he “was never with anyone underage on a physical level.” The response was rejected entirely by his former-fans, who called out the streamer for his actions in the comment section.
With Cryaotic assembling a pretty strong community of over 2 million fans on YouTube and 800,000 Twitch followers, the streamer’s actions have disappointed many who once idolized the on-screen personality. With his streaming career over, it seems likely that Cryaotic’s days in the limelight are truly done. Although Twitch took a long time to go ahead with the ban, it’s good to see the company finally acknowledge the allegations and remove the streamer from the service, especially as many have been calling for the decision for some time now.
Alongside Cryaotic, Twitch has been pressing harder on its bans as of late, taking big names like ZeRo and DarkSydePhil off the site with little notice or fanfare. While that’s largely for the better – with Twitch appropriately dealing its worst punishment in the face of significant allegations and scandals – it has led to a few controversies for the company. Namely, Dr DisRespect’s ban back in June this year, with the company still not coming out and revealing the context behind the punishment. While many agree that it’s a good sign that the company is more accustomed to handing out bans, it seems better communication needs to be a focus as well.
