Remedy dev shares concern about Xbox Series S

Xbox Series S may become a headache for developers, as it creates yet more targets for games to hit.

Sasan Sepehr, a senior technical producer at Control developer Remedy, has Tweeted his thoughts about the Xbox Series S.

“As a consumer, I love this!” Sepehr said in a Tweet reacting to the Xbox Series S price news. “As a Technical Producer, I see trouble.”

In a followup Tweet, Sepehr explained that he’s referring to the pain of game optimisation, which could create problems for Series S.

We obviously still don’t know how the Series S’ lower specs will be utilised by the wider game industry, but Sepehr’s feelings aren’t unwarranted.

Indeed, back when Xbox Series S was just a rumour, many dreaded the idea that a new, lower baseline exists in the next generation of consoles at all. Their thinking being that console games typically target the lowest common denominator, which inevitably means holding back the more powerful console, and lowering the bar for everyone.

While those thoughts are valid, they were also shared before we learned that Series S is using the same CPU in Series X, just slightly under-clocked. Of course, the cheaper console still has to get by with less RAM, lower RAM bandwidth, and a less powerful GPU.

Microsoft is adamant, however, that the lower specs are enough for the console to target 1440p, with perhaps a reduced visual fidelity, and should not affect things like framerate, or the way games are designed. This is uncharted territory for everyone, so it’ll be interesting to see if the official story rings true a few years into the generation.
