The Walking Dead Ending With an Expanded Season, Spin-Off To Follow

AMC announced The Walking Dead will conclude with an expanded two-year eleventh season that will consist of 24 episodes. The series will be followed by a new spin-off starring Melissa McBride as Carol Peletier and Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon.

With the six remaining episodes from The Walking Dead season 10 scheduled to begin airing early next year, there remain only 30 episodes left of the series that will run through late 2022. The Carol and Daryl spin-off will premiere in 2023 with The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang on board with the chief content officer of “The Walking Dead” Universe, Scott M. Gimple. AMC and Gimple are also developing an episodic anthology series titled Tales of the Walking Dead, which will focus on new or existing characters through individual episodes or arcs of episodes that chronicle backstories or other stand-alone experiences.

These two spin-offs are among the multiple projects being developed by AMC and Gimple to expand the Walking Dead universe. “It’s been ten years ‘gone bye;’ what lies ahead are two more to come and stories and stories to tell beyond that,” said Gimple in a statement. “What’s clear is that this show has been about the living, made by a passionate cast, team of writer/producers, producers, and crew, bringing to life the vision put forth by Robert Kirkman in his brilliant comic — and supported by the best fans in the world. We have a lot of thrilling story left to tell on TWD, and then, this end will be [the] beginning of more Walking Dead — brand new stories and characters, familiar faces and places, new voices, and new mythologies. This will be a grand finale that will lead to new premieres. Evolution is upon us. ‘The Walking Dead’ lives.”

Melissa McBride, who has portrayed Carol since the first season of The Walking Dead debuted in 2010, made a statement expressing her fondness for the relationship between Carol and Daryl. “Their shared history is long, and each’s own personal fight to survive, even longer – the more obvious aspect of what has kept them close and loyal. But there is also a rather mysterious aspect to their fondness for one another that I enjoy, and their playfulness when the world permits. I’m very curious! Angela has a way of shaking things up in great and unexpected ways. She’s like a kid playing with the dimmer switch! I’m very excited!” said McBride. “I love the way these characters interact and relate to each other on so many levels and can’t wait to see where their ride goes from here,” added Reedus, who also made his first appearance on the flagship series during the first season.

AMC first expanded The Walking Dead universe with a 2015 companion series titled Fear the Walking Dead, which follows a new group of characters during the early period of the zombie apocalypse and will begin its sixth season on October 11, 2020. Future plans for the franchise include a limited series titled The Walking Dead: World Beyond, which focuses on the first generation raised in the zombie apocalypse, and an untitled feature film produced by AMC, Universal, and Skybound in which Andrew Lincoln will reprise his role as Rick Grimes after leaving the main series in the ninth season.

News of The Walking Dead‘s forthcoming end will be music to the ears of those who have long said the series ran out of steam years ago. So, if the plan is to continue the franchise with even more spin-offs in the coming years, hopefully, the producers can learn from the input The Walking Dead fans provided regarding over the years.

The Walking Dead season 10 resume on AMC on October 4, 2020.
