Magic the Gathering Pro Eats Burrito Mid-Match | Game Rant

To be a professional esports player, one has to remain cool under pressure. But it’s possible that one Magic: The Gathering pro was a little bit too cool. In the middle of a game at the Mythic Invitational Tournament, pro Magic the Gathering player Luis Scott-Vargis started munching down on a burrito.

The Mythic Invitational is one of the biggest Magic tournaments of the year, with a prize pool of over $750,000. This year’s tournament is the first major tournament to use the new Historic format, a format unique to Magic’s online client, Magic Arena. Playing a new format in a huge tournament probably left many players feeling stressed out, but clearly not Scott-Vargis.

Scott-Vargis was piloting a three color sacrifice deck, a style of deck that has done well at previous Magic: The Gathering tournaments. His opponent, Peter Yeh, was playing a three color ramp deck that’s widely considered one of the best decks in the tournament.

The second game of the series was very tight, with both players wrestling for the advantage. Going into the final turns, both players were at very low life totals, and it looked like the game could go either way. But then Scott-Vargis resolved a massive legendary dragon creature. As Yeh desperately searched for answers, Scott-Vargis, already assured in his victory, decided to unwrap a burrito and chow down. In a moment that may become iconic to Magic players, Scott-Vargis toasted with his burrito as his opponent conceded the match.

As Magic tournaments move online due to the coronavirus, there are more opportunities for hijinks like this. During the finals of a recent tournament, one player’s roommate used the bathroom in the background, unaware that he was live on stream. Thankfully, Scott-Vargis’s moment was a little less gross, if not just as strange.
