Nvidia GeForce Now Gets Ansel Screen Capturing Tool for 360 Degree, HD Photos

The development of Nvidia‘s 30-series graphics cards drove software advances that may end up changing the face of media around the world. One such program, Ansel is a tool available through Nvidia Experience that allows the user to move the camera in a game space, use filters, and render game content in high resolution for future publishing.

The entry point for content creators is refreshingly low. Ansel can be run on most Nvidia GeForce 600 series cards or newer, though the most advanced features may be restricted to the Nvidia GeForce 30-series or newer. In order to use it, a user must install Nvidia GeForce Experience, start-up one of the supported games, navigate to whatever area the player wants to take pictures in, and press ALT+F2 to pause the game and open the menu, which will appear on the left-hand side of the screen.

During the Nvidia GeForce special event livestream at the beginning of the month, CEO Jen-Hsun Huang brought up the subject of Machinima, which is the creation of art using in-game content. “It’s becoming a whole new art genre,” he said. Undoubtedly that is one of the motivations behind the creation of this tool. Ansel enables the capture of high-resolution stills and complete 360° VR-capable panoramas using in-game assets which were previously restricted to the player’s native camera.

This has huge implications for media in the era of stay-at-home lockdown fever. Big box media production has been interrupted, and highly anticipated movies like Wonder Woman 1984 have been pushed out to Holiday 2020 or later. Next year’s media may rely on 3D technology more than ever before, since it is a lot easier for voice actors to keep up social distancing than it is for in-person film crews to keep disinfecting.

Game developers had mixed reactions to Nvidia’s programs. On the one hand, giving players an unrestricted camera means that 3D asset makers have to pay attention to angles that most players may not play from. On the other, allowing players to share amazing in-game moments is good for a title’s visibility and therefore its profitability. Activision Blizzard and 2K Games, among others, objected when their titles were included with Nvidia Now, so the company has switched to an opt-in program for game developers.

Content creators who want to know whether their favorite game will support Ansel should look at Nvidia’s list of GeForce Experience-supported games and select Ansel from the drop-down menu on the right. Notable titles include ARK: Survival Evolved, Grand Theft Auto V, Madden NFL19, and World of Warcraft. Expect to see an increase of fan-fiction using game stills, especially Star Wars content created in The Sims 4.
