The benchmarks for the recently unveiled Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 have shown it to be a huge leap in performance compared to the current generation of graphics cards, however performance is certainly not the only huge thing about it. What appears to be the first ever image of the RTX 3090 squeezing into a standard PC case have leaked at Chinese hardware site ChipHell.
The photo shows what appears to be the same sample card that appeared in leaked images prior to the official unveiling of the Nvidia RTX 3090, as it is lacking the titanium edging of the final card design. The image also shows the RTX 3090 using a dual 8-pin to 12-pin power adapter, which is certainly not the most elegant cabling solution, but will be required until power supplies become available that incorporate the new 12-pin connector design.
Measuring a gigantic 31.3 by 13.8 cm, the card appears to be resting on, or right next to a drive bay, which is likely to be restricting some of the airflow that the dual sided fans can create. The smaller RTX 3080 has been weighed at 1.355 kg by gaming site Tom’s Hardware, creating concerns that the almost certainly heavier RTX 3090 might sag and add extra wear or damage to the motherboard. However, anti-sag devices are available that can fix the problem, while some cards from partner manufacturers include such devices as standard.
With an uncommon triple slot design, few were expecting the RTX 3090 to be compact, but just how big the card is compared to the current generation RTX 2080 Ti has surprised many. Any gamers thinking about buying an RTX 3090 will need to carefully check the sizing and space available in their case, as even if the card fits, it will need plenty of space above and underneath for airflow and ventilation. It is expected that some aftermarket cards will be even bigger, with Asus recently showing its ROG STRIX RTX 3090 attached to an ITX motherboard that looks tiny by comparison.
Pushing the limits of graphics card technology is always going to result in large hardware designs, and in creating the fastest gaming graphics card ever, Nvidia has definitely allowed as much space as possible for the RTX 3090 GPU to dissipate heat and create airflow. Gamers with the budget for such a remarkable graphics card are unlikely to be put off by the possible need for a new case though.
Besides, gamers that do need a new case are likely to quickly forget the complication after seeing just how high the RTX 3090 will take their frame rates, even at 8K resolution.
