Starting today, Splinter Cell protagonist Sam Fisher is joining the Rainbow Six Siege roster as a playable operator. While Fisher’s inclusion in the game is a welcome sight for many fans, others are unhappy that Ubisoft has not released a new Splinter Cell game in years, prompting several users on Twitter to share memes to express their dissatisfaction.
Ubisoft announced last month that Fisher would join Rainbow Six Siege as a playable character for the game’s Operation Shadow Legacy update. So far, many fans and gaming sites have praised Fisher’s arrival and how he plays as an operator. But fans who were already displeased that the last Splinter Cell game – Splinter Cell: Blacklist – released seven years ago grew even angrier, with some accusing Ubisoft of relegating Splinter Cell to cameos in other Tom Clancy games rather than creating a new title.
Some of those fans hoped that perhaps Ubisoft would hear their complaints, realize the demand for a new Splinter Cell title, and officially announce the game’s next installment at the September 10 Ubisoft Forward livestream. But no such announcement was made. This prompted several fans to take to Twitter and share memes that mocked Ubisoft and expressed their desire for a new Splinter Cell.
One of the top rated reactions was made by IGN Executive Editor Ryan McCaffrey, who noted that in order to please fans, Ubisoft should release an Unreal Engine 5 remake, not remaster, of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. The critically acclaimed hit released in 2005 and became a favorite among fans of the series. The game’s age and acclaim among fans make it a worthwhile candidate to receive the full remake treatment. Ubisoft would undoubtedly score points with unhappy fans by revisiting the title.
Some fans reacted with humorous memes. A user with the handle @KinoFabino tweeted a photoshopped picture of Fisher comfortably sleeping. The tweet received almost 2,000 likes, signifying that many fans agree with post’s sentiment that Ubisoft would probably not announce a new Splinter Cell game, no matter how many fans want it.
Another user, whose username is Kyle Campbell, compared Splinter Cell to Silent Hill, another franchise with a passionate fan base who are dying for a new entry. The user posted a still from Silent Hill 2 with his tweet.
Evidently, there is high a demand for a new Splinter Cell game, but whether Ubisoft will see this and give fans what they want is unknown. The developer likely recognizes that another Splinter Cell game would be at least be somewhat lucrative, especially in the absence of other stealth-focused franchises like Metal Gear. One new rumor from Fisher’s voice actor indicates that Ubisoft may in fact be planning Splinter Cell‘s comeback.
Rainbow Six Siege is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
