Borderlands 3 Getting PS5 and Xbox Series X Upgrades, New Splitscreen Options, and More

Many gamers the world over are indubitably excited for the promises of the next-gen PS5 and Xbox Series X. Not only are there a slew of new games of the horizon, but several games such as Cyberpunk 2077 have confirmed that they will be available with free upgrades on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Now, during Gearbox’s PAX Online presentation, the gaming giant has confirmed that Borderlands 3 will be coming to next-gen consoles too.

Borderlands 3 players will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version of the current console. Xbox One owners will get the free upgrade to Xbox Series X, while PS4 owners will be able to upgrade to PS5 for free as well. Further, this applies not just to the base game but all additional content. That means Season Pass owners or those who have purchased the DLC, including Mad Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot; Guns, Love, and Tentacles; Bounty of Blood: A Fistful of Redemption; and Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck will be able to keep their content.

Beyond the base game and content, all saves will carry over to next gen, so Borderlands 3 players will be able to pick up where they left off with their mains and continue to grind for the best loot on the best console possible. According to Gearbox, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game will support 4K resolution running at 60 frames per second. As such, it appears players should expect a significant upgrade when moving from one gen to the next.

Additionally, the next-gen versions of Borderlands 3 will launch with two major co-op features. First, players will finally be able to play 2-player splitscreen with the split occurring either horizontally or vertically. Secondly, players will be able to play 4-player splitscreen in couch co-op with their friends. These changes, especially the vertical split screen, have been long-requested by players, but it’s not just locked to the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions. They will be added to current-gen versions in a patch at some point as well.

This, coupled with the announcement that new DLC is coming, means that Gearbox decided to go big with its PAX Online presentation. This new DLC isn’t part of the season pass but comes a new game mode and the added bonus of a brand new skill tree for every single Vault Hunter. For now, Gearbox is keeping its cards close to its chest, only teasing FL4K’s new skill tree, his new crowd-control based action skill called Gravity Snare, and a brand new companion: a Hyperion Loaderbot.

Borderlands 3 is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are in development.
