Despite having a very abrupt announcement and not even being leaked prior (a rarity for major game announcements this year), it didn’t take long for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity to generate a lot of excitement. Aside from being a follow-up to the popular Wii U spin-off, it will also be acting as a prequel to Breath of the Wild.
We don’t even have to wait long for it to release, as Nintendo confirmed that it will be out this November. And if waiting two more months is still too long, new information is already on the way, with Nintendo previously stating that it will arrive in only a couple of weeks.
Exact details were scarce, but developer Koei Tecmo, responsible for the original Hyrule Warriors and the Dynasty Warriors series, has said that we will see new gameplay footage during its program at this year’s Tokyo Game Show on September 26th, as handily translated by PushDustin.
According to the schedule, courtesy of Gematsu, it will serve as the second half of the program, so we can maybe expect roughly 20 – 25 minutes of footage. Fans can expect to see live gameplay for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, so it won’t just be repeating what we already saw in the announcement trailer and will go into a bit more depth into how the game works.
Koei Tecmo will also introduce the playable characters. So far, fans know Link, Zelda, and the four Champions will be playable, all of whom we saw glimpses of in the announcement trailer, so hopefully we’ll see them in more depth.
However, fans already suspect that there are more playable characters waiting in the wings. Considering the roster only consists of six characters, we can definitely expect more to be announced. The original Hyrule Warriors had 13 characters at launch and DLC brought that number up to 33. As for who else could be included, fans already suspect that Impa, who was an old woman in Breath of the Wild, is in the game already and some also think that the tiny Guardian robot seen in the key art is playable too.
Regardless, Age of Calamity is already shaping up to be a popular and successful title. Apparently, its announcement led to increased sales for the Switch port of the first Hyrule Warriors, most likely due to those who didn’t play it wanting to catch up to understand the excitement around the new game.
In related news, Persona fans are confused and annoyed that neither Koei Tecmo or Atlus have commented on a Western release for Persona 5 Scramble, the Warriors-style spin-off/sequel to the hit JRPG. It released in Japan back in February but there has been no word on when it will launch in the West, with many hoping that it will appear as part of Atlus’ presence at TGS.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will release for Nintendo Switch on November 20th.
