Sims 4 had some good aspects to it, but there were also some that were not as well liked. Here are some pros and cons for the game!

10 Liked: No more Gender Boundaries

An age old complaint from the sims community was that in create-a-sim simmers were limited on expressing themselves when it comes to gender identity. However, in Sims 4, that changed! Players could create-a-sim without worrying about restrictions on the walk style, physique, and even tone of voice. To top it all off, simmers could now put any clothing item and hairstyle on there Sims. This was well received by the community and a great push for inclusiveness by EA.

9 Disliked: No open world

Many players thought Sims 3’s introduction to open world was a game-changer. Your sim could now walk home from the bar, even if that bar was across a bridge. It was one of the biggest requests from the community and EA finally fulfilled it, but then took it away and in Sims 4 This was a big complaint because now players were back to instance base events or “Rabbit Holes” that took away some of Sims life realism that the community asked for.

8 Liked: Weather interactions

When expansion packs became the norm for the series to always include, a few packs became a recurring theme like pet expansions and seasons expansion. So, as usual, The Sims 4 released the season’s expansion pack and with it came dynamic weather systems. In this pack, the weather also varied in certain worlds like Oasis Springs, where it never really snowed due to the warmer weather. Sims 4 brought even more interactions your sims can have with the weather. As usual, sims will get a negative moodlet when caught in the rain, but now your sim can choose to play in the rain! Sims can also dress for the weather, which helps fight the negative moodlets from being too hot or too cold. Yes, the weather became mainstay for a reason; it helps so much with the realism Sims try to emulate.

7 Disliked: Limited Base Game

Every player knows the Sims titles are never just their base game. Players expect and anticipate the expansion and stuff packs to follow through the life of the game. While the expansion does improve the game and add more options and events, the base is still the core of what the extra packs will be built off of.

For Sims 4, players were not excited to see a very stripped down based game. Players complained of no open world, fewer choices in create-a-sim, and fewer options for housing. This made it, so the extra packs basically built the game upon its two feet, and it left players who don’t care for the costly expansion packs disappointed.

6 Liked: Holidays

With Sims 4 came an interactive calendar that kept track of the Holidays similar to the real deals. This calendar also kept track of the birthdays of all the sims in a player’s current household. Players can set dates, see their work schedules, and the weather; It was a much needed mechanic players appreciated and added a lot of value to the sims in-game day to day lives.

5 Disliked: Restrictive Emotion System

A more complex system in The Sims that EA has approached differently over the years is the emotion systems. This includes Moods, reactions to dislikes, and now in Sims 4 more complex emotions like inspired and fine. Unfortunately, these new tweaks to emotions came with some noticeable drawbacks. The major issue was that when a player’s sim was in a bad mood, sad, tense, or angry, the sim could not do certain activities until they were in a better mood. Players thought this was restrictive, and the frequency was unbalanced. Mods were even made to balance out the emotion system and to bypass the emotion restriction.

4 Liked: Date Night/Restaurants

Instead of Rabbit Holes and random food items, players could now have a full dinner date experience. Players would have to buy The Sims 4 Dine Out expansion pack, but it added a good bit to the gameplay.

Players could go out to eat and actually pick their food and drinks from a menu. Players could even own their restaurant and customize it from the menu to the staff outfits. So many creative ideas for the community to play with, good move!

3 Expansion Dependent

As I mentioned before, players have said Sims 4’s base game lacked in creative content to use and was more bare then they expected. But the expansion packs were very creative, and add a lot of value. Expansion packs like Seasons and Get Together adds things that players think should already be in the base game. Many who intend to just play the base game have said it lacked too much without buying some expansion packs, and to some players, this is really important.

2 Liked: Being A Veterinarian

Another well-anticipated expansion pack was the Cats and Dog installment. Avid players of the Sims series know that a pet’s expansion is always expected for every future release. Pets are here to stay for sims, so for Sims 4, they went further and added veterinary clinics. Players could own a vet clinic and be a veterinarian. Players can take other sims pet temperatures, take X rays, and give diagnoses and medicine to the furry friends.

1 Disliked: Cartoonish style

When the Sims 4 trailer dropped players immediately noticed the character designs became more… cartoonish. The Sims community thought EA’s goal for the Sims was to get close to realistic simulated life. What that meant was that character customization and design would get better graphics for each game and better life interaction.

So fans were, to say the least, were not impressed, while some welcomed the fresh new look. All in all, some in the community took this as another sign that EA was stepping away from the hyper-realistic Sims they dreamed of.
