The upcoming release of Spider-Man: Miles Morales has renewed interest in the superhero. This was last experienced when Spider-Man PS4 had been released in 2018. The game has been lauded for being one of the few genuinely engaging superhero games to be made. And yet, Spider-Man PS4 is far from a flawless title.
In order to be an improvement on its predecessor, Spider-Man: Miles Morales has to capitalize on the lessons learned. These are the shortcomings of Spider-Man PS4 that fans and critics have singled out. To be a success, Miles Morales has to avoid these mistakes and figure out a way to present a more unique gameplay style.
10 Repetitive And Extended Boss Fights
There are plenty of good villains to be found in Spider-Man PS4. The mistake the game made, however, was overloading these guys where they weren’t needed. Baddies show up simultaneously which, despite being fun at times, is overkill as these same characters are fought earlier.
The knack for repetition in these foes is also apparent in Spider-Man PS4. This has the effect of taking away the value of fighting them since it’s the same, only in a different location. In order to truly engage the player, Miles Morales has to find a balance in doling out boss fights.
9 Open World With Not Much To Do
There’s no chance of naming Spider-Man PS4 among the best sandbox games out there. It comes down to the game’s mistake of preferring flashiness over substance. Miles Morales needs to bring forward a city that is both fun to swing around and also to engage in.
The previous title can give you plenty of opportunities to feel like Spidey, but this charm wears off soon enough when you’ve got nothing to do. The next game has to avoid long bouts of lethargy in playthrough and bring stuff to do around the city.
8 Inconsistent Character Personality Traits
One of the reasons why Spider-Man 2 is debated to be better than Spider-Man PS4 is because the former Peter Parker is consistent in his character. The PS4 version personality is a little uneven as he suddenly turns on the jokes but then becomes rather mellow without warning. The good thing with Miles Morales is that his personality is consistent, being curious, and determined.
The follow-up game has to overcome the previous one’s insistence toward presenting the protagonist with a lot of personality traits. Miles Morales’ characterization has been set, meaning he doesn’t need to be too funny when that’s not how he’s supposed to be.
7 Unspectacular Side Missions
There are some great side missions in Spider-Man PS4, and some bad. All of them, though, have little to nothing memorable about them. The game’s fault here is that it focuses far too much on the main storyline, which makes everything else play second fiddle.
Miles Morales is already a spin-off, meaning fans will expect its story not to be too heavy-handed. This also means that the game has to deliver on the side material, as this is where players will want to get the full value out of their purchase. To do this, side missions need to have a value attached that doesn’t center around the main story.
6 Ineffective And Uninteresting Fight Moves
In order to stand out from other superhero games, Miles Morales should present the protagonist with his own fighting style. This is because he needs to have his own identity rather than seem like a rehash of the Peter Parker Spider-Man.
Along with that, the game needs to overcome the lack of fight options the previous one had. Spider-Man PS4’s combat issues spring up due to basically the same moves being needed. Combos are largely useless, with spamming buttons a much more favorable way to fight. Miles Morales will get lost instantly if it has the same combat mechanics.
5 Costumes With No Substance
If it wants to rank among the best Spider-Man games of all-time, then Miles Morales can’t afford to tout Spidey suits and fail to deliver on them like the previous title. Sure, the game had a lot of these costumes, but they were pretty much fluff in execution as you can finish the game without needing even one of these.
If Miles Morales stresses how important these alternate costumes are, then they have to be applied within the main storyline as well. Earning them shouldn’t follow Spider-Man PS4’s tedious requirement of collecting trinkets either.
4 The Main Character Being Adapted To His Powers Instantly
One of the reasons why fans want Miles Morales to be the main protagonist over Peter Parker is for the chance to play as a superhero who’s learning about his powers. This will be a fresh take on things, as players can test Miles’ abilities from the ground up.
The game shouldn’t go the route of Spider-Man PS4, where Peter is already well versed with his powers and knows all his enemies. It takes away from the idea of playing as a superhero if everything’s already sorted out. With Miles being so young, he needs to be presented as a novice.
3 Waste Time Setting Up Spin-Offs
There are so many hooks for spin-offs in Spider-Man PS4 that it’s natural people came up with their own wish lists over which character they want to see next. This mistake cost the game some of its replay value, as it’s not engaging to play as a side character when you know what’s about to happen.
With Miles Morales already a spin-off, it doesn’t need any supporting characters stealing focus from the protagonist. Miles has to be the central character, with no diversion in the story where someone else is made the playable character. If this does happen, then you can be certain Miles is going to get forgotten.
2 Excessive Stealth Missions
If there’s one way to guarantee a total drop in the pacing of a game, it’s by putting in stealth missions right after heavy action sequences. Spider-Man PS4 unfortunately does indulge in these, which is far from the most fun players had with the game.
Miles Morales needs to learn from this drawback, and this can be done by using the stealth mission sparingly and only through Miles. This can have him use his web-slinging for discreet use, thereby combining his Spider-Man powers with his stealth skillset.
1 Presenting Awful Puzzles Sequences
In this case, the only way to fix the mistake is through total omission. Spider-Man PS4 tended to totally kill the momentum by bringing puzzle sequences in the middle of missions. These are extremely boring and contribute nothing to the plot or gameplay.
Miles Morales should be a game that celebrates the best of Spider-Man, not random puzzles that prove nothing to the main character’s growth. Not to mention that Miles isn’t like Peter, meaning he shouldn’t be getting into puzzle-solving as it would be too much of the same.
