The Witcher 3: 10 Hidden Details You Never Noticed About Crach an Craite

The Witcher 3 is considered by many to be one of the greatest role-playing experiences of all time. CD Projekt Red truly knocked it out of the part with this epic masterpiece, making it hard for anyone to believe that this was only the third fully-fledged release in the company’s history. There are simply way too many elements of this game have been perfected to a T — the combat, story, lore, graphics, and atmosphere are just a few of the positive highlights that deserve a mention.

However, it would be impossible to talk about the sheer fidelity of The Witcher 3 without mentioning its amazing cast of characters, all of whom have their distinct personalities and end up adding to the allure of the title in more ways than one. This is especially true when Geralt finally reaches the shores of Skellige, where he’s introduced to a number of characters… including the legendary Crach an Craite.

10 His Name Roughly Translates To “Raid Of The Tormented”

Crach’s full name can actually be translated into Irish, albeit somewhat crudely. Craite translates to tormented, while Crach means raid in Irish.

So, combining both these names leads to the formed sentence being “raid of the tormented.” However, the sentence is dramatically incorrect in Irish… and, to be fair, Crach already has a pretty awesome alias of his own.

9 He’s Known As The Wild Boar Of The Sea For A Reason

As a fearsome Skelliger, Crach gained a reputation of carrying out vicious raids with his fleet of drakkar — basically a longship of shorts — on the coastlines of the Empire.

This led to him attaining the moniker “Tirth ys Muire,” which roughly translates to “The Wild Boar of the Sea.”

8 He Decided To Modify The Bow Of His Longship To Reflect His Moniker

It was no secret that Crach was extremely fond of this moniker, and one need only look at the design of his drakkar to understand why this is the case.

In a bid to personify his alias, Carch decided to design the bow of his longship in such a manner that it would resemble a wild boar’s head. Of course, he pulled no punches when it came to this decoration, with the wood being taken from Gedyneith — the sacred oak of Ard Skellig — itself.

7 He Had An Affair With Yennefer

One aspect of Crach’s character that might surprise a ton of fans is the fact that he actually had a brief affair with Yennefer.

However, unlike her relationship with Geralt, this tryst with Crach was only for a short time and didn’t really have any long-term implications. This can be seen in the fact that…

6 Yennefer Disappeared For Three Decades After Crach Asked For Her Hand In Marriage

During their affair, it is rumored that Crach actually bit the bullet and asked for the sorceress’ hand in marriage. Yennefer’s response was quite cold — she kissed Crach on the brow… before opening a portal and disappearing for almost three decades.

While this might be rather heartbreaking, one can’t deny that the circumstances discussed above is pretty much classic Yennefer. In fact, these rumors might not even be true, given the fact that…

5 Crach Always Had A Soft Spot For The Raven-Haired Sorceress

Their affair might’ve not ended on a particularly high note, but Crach always held Yennefer in high regard, coming to her rescue and seeing to her every need whenever she requested anything of him.

Whether it be researching magic, seeking out a safe spot, or finding Ciri — Crach always made sure that Yennefer was never inconvenienced during her stay in Skellige.

4 He Swore A Blood Oath To Protect Ciri After The Death Of Duny And Pavetta

Duny and Pavetta — Ciri’s parents — died during a trip in Skellige, with angered Calanthe, Pavetta’s mother, to no end.

Her rage was directed towards Crach, whom she forced into a bloedgeas — blood oath — to always protect Ciri and come to her aid whenever it is requested of him.

3 He Broke Off A Naive Engagement Between Ciri And Hjalmar

During one of Ciri’s excursions to Skellige, she beat Hjalmar — Crach’s eldest son — in ice skating, breaking his record in the process. Hjalmar wasn’t one to take this lying down and decided to push his limits to shatter the record that Ciri had set… but the only thing he shattered was his own bones.

Ciri decided to comfort the bedridden Hjalmar later on, and both individuals naively agreed to an engagement that sent the alarm bells ringing for Crach. Fearing Calanthe’s wrath — something he’d already faced after the death of Duny and Pavetta — Crach quickly called the engagement off before asking Calanthe to take Ciri away.

2 For A Battle-Hardened Skelliger, Crach Was Oddly Progressive

One of the most puzzling traits about Crach is the fact that he’s surprisingly progressive, especially given his upbringing as a manly tough-as-nails Skelliger. It might be possible that the game took some liberty with Crach’s character in a bid to make him more likable.

The mere fact that he understood that Cerys was a better leader in spite of her being a woman is proof enough that he didn’t believe in the age-old traditions about only men being capable of being leaders, which is proof enough of his progressive disposition.

1 Crach’s Death At The Hands Of Eredin Was Foretold By A Prophecy

Crach’s death is one of the more emotional moments in The Witcher 3… and was apparently also foretold by a prophecy that the jarl had feared for the longest time.

When he was young, Crach was informed of a prophecy where he would deal with a foreign threat on the Skellige Isles, which he wrongfully assumed to be the Emperor of Nilfgaard.

However, it turned out that the prophecy was actually referring to Eredin, who speared Crach with his blade at the end of The Witcher 3 and ended his life.
